UT/ BAMA Rivalry

Living on the Tennessee Alabama border, just the sheer numbers of UT and Bama a fans makes it bigger in our immediate area, as Auburn is a distant 3rd it numbers, but the Huntsville TV stations still cover Auburn as if it were number 2. Plus having spent time stationed in Lower Alabama there is no doubt that the Bama Auburn rivalry is their number one rivalry, unless you live along the border or going to Bama playing having grown up in Tennessee Auburn is always going to be your biggest rival.

For me, becuase I live in crapabama, this game means much more to me...even though we haven't really put up too much of a fight (barring 2009) in a while.

Just met an Auburn fan that tried to tell me that the Barn and BAMA rivalry was more important than the UT/BAMA rivalry. I of course told him differently. He argued that the in state added more to the importance. I was just curious to what Volnation thought.

to them, far greater than UT - Bama. to both sides it is. to mnay UT fans, Bama is the top rival but not on their side..

I believe the fact that Tennessee has beaten Alabama more than any other school has beaten them, including the Barn, a lot of Bammers feel it's UT/Bama. With the split of the SEC into two divisions combined with UT rebuilding the Bama/Barn Rivalry has grown more lately.

I still root for Tennessee and whoever is playing Alabama just like my Dad taught me.

Bama/AU is the biggest rivalry in all of football. Its always been that way, you just didnt know about it.

Personally, nothing more important than whooping Bama's arse.

quote from a Bama fan.

UT and UA are both top 10 teams of all time. They were the rocks upon which the SEC was built. They have history that overlaps in ways too numerous to list. When API and UA were not playing, UA and UT were making history.

AU and Bama haven't played each other for more than 40 years while UT/Bama were making history.

AU's name was API (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) until the 60's.

Alabama has the most SEC Championships. Tennessee is 2nd. Historically, there is no more important rivalry in the entire conference.

In terms of more importance, then Aub v Bama is much more important that UT v Bama. An interdivisional game is always more important than a cross divisional. A Bama loss to UT is 1 loss. A Bama loss to Auburn is 1.5 losses.

Historically speaking, UT and Bama have dominated the conference with Florida and LSU consistently coming into that picture in the last 20 years. UT/Bama will always be the most important game in the conference when both teams are top tier. Regardless, it is for the most part a hard fought win or loss. Auburn will always be the red headed step child to Bama regardless of a few seasons here or there. I can only think of 3 years that Auburn had a great team. Bo Jackson, and Cam Newton/Farely were significant reasons for two of those teams. They historically remind me of Georgia. I think with the right coach any team can dominate the conference for a few years. It takes a Historical program to continue to do it over decades. That is why to me UT/Bama will always be the most important game year in year out. Florida is getting into that category unless Muschamp turns into Zook 2.0.

I'd say Michigan/Ohio State is the biggest rivalry in college football. The hatred there is legitimately second-to-none.

It's UT/Bama with out the southern class. I may hate Bama, but I do respect them. I don't respect Florida. Florida fans are basically Jersey Shore trash IMO.

Just a side note, Neyland was hired to beat Vanderbilt. I know it sounds crazy but they used to beat us. He was so good that he made them irrelevant. Bear Bryant said everything he knew about coaching he learned from Neyland. So the general was so good that he led to the bear dominating us after Neyland retired.

The Bear was hired to beat Neyland. Any knowledgeable Bama fan will tell you that. Hard to find one smart enough to remember that though.

I love the 3rd Saturday in October, it is one of college footballs great rivalries and I love to hate the crimson turd. But when come down to it the iron bowl is bigger.

Idk if anyone has covered this yet but the reason for the UT/ Bama rivalry is because back in the early days of the SEC Tennessee and Alabama were the first two out of the south to make noise on the national stage and they were the top two dominant teams in the SEC. So the 3rd Saturday in october was the measuring stick for each other and the SEC.

Given that we hired him six years after Neyland coached his last game, that seems like a rather strange reason for Bryant's hiring.

Try Google before you try sounding intellectually superior by posting something that can easily be verified as false.

The AU-UAT game is a rivalry.

The UT-UAT game is a hatred.

There is a difference.

The Barn and Bammer fans share the misery of both living in a craphole state. The Vols and Bammer fans only share one thing - a mutual bone-chilling dislike of each other.

I disagree. I respect Tennessee, and look forward to that game every year. I have no respect for the barn, and I simply look forward to that game being over for another year.

I appreciate the respect from Bammers. But it's not something I've seen much of nor given in my 40 years.

Barn-Bama series resumed in 1948 after about a 40 year break.

UT-Bama series since the 1920's.

The bear thought the Tennessee game was the rival game. He's the one that started the whole cigar thing.

Agreed. It's impressive that they muster up so much hate for fans they don't interact with that much.

I'd love to say Tennessee is Alabama's biggest rival, but I just don't believe it at all. To some fans, sure, but not to most.

I'd say the number of Bama fans who consider UT their biggest rival is growing smaller with the younger generation.

I will take a loss to Bummer every single year for a win against UF every single year. I wont like it and wont be fun but its better overall.
