Just met an Auburn fan that tried to tell me that the Barn and BAMA rivalry was more important than the UT/BAMA rivalry. I of course told him differently. He argued that the in state added more to the importance. I was just curious to what Volnation thought.

I think your friend is probably right . . . if you mean according to Bama/Barn fans.

Depends on your definition of important, and to who you are talking. To a Vol fan? OF COURSE the UT v. bama rivalry is more important. To a barner? OF COURSE the AU v. UA rivalry.

I wonder what most bama fans think... Probably the AU one.

Have you ever spent any time in that state? I co-oped in Birmingham... the most important thing to know was whether you were a bammer or a barner.

Probably goes by cycles with Bama fans. I'll go ahead and guess that Tennessee was the big rival in the late 90s and Auburn is right now. Although the fact that the Bear considered Tennessee to be the primary test of strength is telling.

The odd thing about Tennessee football is that we're not viewed as the top rivalry by what we consider our top 2 rivals and we don't view the two teams that see us as their top rivalry as remotely our biggest game.

EDIT: That sentence is kind of tortured now that I read it.

Saw something similar to this on TigerDroppings... a lot of unbiased ppl were saying UT/BAMA was the biggest rivalry in the SEC.

Most bama fans agreed with this, as well as the Tenn fans. Auburn fans were the only ones that disagreed.

I have quite a few Bama friends and they think the Barn is the more important rivalry.

I hate BAMA every day of the week and twice on Sunday, but there is no bigger rivalry than the Iron Bowl.

Older Bama fans would probably say UT and the younger generation would probably say AU. JMO.

Has everything to do with state lines, nothing more. if Vandy were a worthy opponent they would be our biggest rival. As it is...lol.

So the same as Oregon there is no neutral?

What is their defenition of important, and it depends on who you ask.
Easy to say the last two years Alabama Auburn. In 2009 Alabama won all their games including their instate rival beating Auburn. In 2010 it was sweet revenge with Auburn coming back 24-0 to win on the road. Seems similar to the Ravens imploding in Divisional playoff vs the Steelers.
Both teams imploded, and gave up double digit leads.

The Alabama Tennessee rivalry is still important but since Saban became the head coach the Vols have been the punching bag.

I got it and agree!

Go to youtube and search "I hate tennessee." I am a noob AND i'm on mobile so I cant figure out how to imbed a link. But it will be the first video you see. It is a bammer talking about how much he hates tennessee and it's honestly quite hilarious. If you can, feel free to provide a link for me in this thread since I am apparently incompetent enough to do so myself! GBO V,B

I've lived in Mobile, AL for the past eight years, and I'd have to say the feeling I get listening to both Auburn and Bammer fans is the rivalry between them is more important than any other rivalry. Important being a desire to win.

Since Fulmer stepped aside the hate for Tennessee has diminished considerably. I still have that hate though. I'd just like to get back to whipping their a$$.:crossfingers:

My point to him was that overall in history the UT/Bama rivalry has been more important nationally. But over the last 10-20 years, with how the conference has done divisions that the important to the younger generations has been focused on the UT/Florida and the Bama/Barn rivalry.

I saw my first Al / Tenn game in the late 1940's and remember the rivalry as between two schools who had a great deal of respect for one another. I miss those days, or at least the spirit of the rivalry. I cannot "hate" anyone who cheers for a different color than crimson, or coaches / plays for another team. I appreciate the work those young men put in to entertain us. My idea of a rivalry is Bama / Tenn over the decades. Bama / Aub is a "johnny-come-lately" rivalry that has gotten out of hand.

There is no rivalry in all of sports equal to Bama/Barn. I argued otherwise until I lived in that inbred/backward/illiterate/ state. Their allegiance to their football team is far greater than their allegiance to their religion.

The Bear allegedly cared more about beating Tennessee than he did about beating Auburn. Perhaps this derives from the fact that he never beat General Neyland. He took his frustrations out on those of us who came of age as fans during the 1970s.

I love our rivalry with Alabama, but it's hard to argue that there are any rivalries in college football that match the year-to-year intensity of Alabama-Auburn.

My best friend who is a big bammer swears that we have no true rival, unless you count vandy, or maybe kentucky. He thinks that bama and florida are not true rivalries, which I wholeheartedly disagree with.

However, another good friend who is a barner believes Third Saturday in October to be a bigger rivalry than the Iron Bowl.

Answer: In the eyes of the beholder I guess.
