UT apparel tidbit

For all of those who posted that Dooley does not wear Adidas sponsored apparel, how do you explain the following pictures? On the other hand, if Dooley prefers to wear a standard white polo with an orange T as shown in the last image, then more power to him... I like that plain shirt better than any of the others Adidas is promoting. They look like crap imo, and I certainly wouldn't buy one.

no one said he never wears it but they claimed some items aren't specifically made for UT. Example given is the gray pullover. It's Adidas but may not be made specifically for UT

I really like the shirt in the bottom pic. A simple white shirt with a small power T. Can't find one. The shirts with the orange on the shoulders look more appropriate for that other UT.

I realize that... which is why I said "Adidas sponsored" apparel in my post.

I do like the adidas uniforms ok. They do a nice job at keeping them traditional. However, the fan apparel is crap. I like Dooleys style with the plain shirt with just a power T on the chest. I only wear the stuff that Cutter-Buck makes for UT that they sell in the bookstore. Thats more my style.

Adidas needs to figure out that some fans don't like orange all over the shoulders of our shirts and those 3 racing stripes on both sleeves and the back for every single item. Its hideous. And for t-shirts, can adidas not make a simple shirt or pocket tee with a power T on the chest or Tennessee written out in a small conservative fashion. UT stuff like that is so hard to find nowadays. I dont want TENNESSEE in 2000 pt font written all the way across every single UT shirt I own. For some its okay, but not every single little thing.

Come on Adidas, less is more. It doesn't make sense how traditional the uniforms are and then the apparel is all covered with stupid little stripes and random blotches of orange. Stay classy...

Maybe CDD doesnt like what Adidas sends him to wear. Maybe Adidas should be smart and consult CDD and see what he likes and make stuff for him. Just a thought...

I'm not a marketing major however, it sure could help their sales if they hooked up CDD with stuff he likes and then sold something comparable to the general public.

Just sayin....

Iowa State, Vandy, Kentucky, Kansas State, Minnesota.. Not all of Nike's school are elite.

Ok? I didn't say they all were..but there are way more elite schools with nike than adidas. Texas, bama, usc, florida, oklahoma, miami, fsu, boise, v tech..etc etc

Personally I like adidas. Actually more of a puma guy.

But I love this topic. As far as fan gear goes you can get all different brands. I see tons of Nike stuff around. How does it affect fans by what brand the team wears?

If that is important to you why not pull for one of those teams. Personally, most of us could care less. Peyton Manning wore Sports Belle Jerseys that were made in Powell and still played like an All-American quarterback.

Funny thing is, he did that. They actually meet with the coach every year to d that. And he approved all of the stuff he is supposed to wear. That's one reason why so much of the fan gear is one color and plain this year compared to other adidas schools with the same template, but with different colors on the different panels.

He wears the standard coaches polo thats available everywhere. The fleece he wore was from his personal stuff, even though he helped design a similar fleece sold in stores.

My cousin actually supplies local high schools and small colleges around Chatt with their apparel. The way I understand this to work is that adidas, Nike, etc. don't "send" anybody anything--the university is given an amount of credit, say $25MM for example at a school like UT, and that is what they use for the entire athletic school year for all sports.

The caveat being, all apparel is debited at retail vs. any kind of discount. So the coaches' sideline polos that we pay $65 for at the UT bookstore also "cost" the university $65 out of their credit amount. At the end of the season, major universities almost always owe the companies a few million bucks over equipment.

As a side note, his biggest customer is Nike. Most players/schools view Nike gear as superior (himself included), but he says a lot of his Knox customers are adidas schools because of the brand's impact on UT.

Also interesting: all Nike, adidas, Reebok, etc. jerseys are made at the same factory in Wisconsin or something. Last time I saw him he had official jerseys from Boise St, UGA, WVA, TCU, Arkansas, Ohio State (their throwbacks), among others. They are skin tight even if you weren't wearing pads.

Edit: Yea so how this all relates to Dooley not wearing adidas I'm not sure, but thought it was neat when he was telling me about this stuff.

That's how it works for some smaller schools, but not exactly how it works at major schools like Tennessee.

It's true that the contract allows for an "x" amount of product, but it's not calculated at retail price, it's usually wholesale. Anything additional comes at half wholesale. There are options to choose from, but most sports get the same basic t's and warmups, then get a little flexibility for their travel gear and other stuff.

For football, however, the contract is a little different, because it's the most visible sport. The coaches select the sideline wardrobe for the season in the spring, which allows Adidas to go to retailers with what will be worn on the sidelines to drive sales. Football is sent those products. Once they've selected the wardrobe with Adidas they are supposed to wear only those products on the sideline.

As far as jersey manufacturers, that's partly true. Reebok (for NFL and NBA), Adidas and Under Armour all use Ripon Athletic in Wisconsin for their jerseys. The TechFit jerseys are made overseas in Isreal sand are letterd and adjusted by Ripon. Nike uses Powers Athletic, which I believe is in Iowa for the majority of their uniforms.

This is actually causing a conflict in the NFL for next year. Ripon has been making most teams' jerseys since the 60s, with a variety of manufacturers logos on the sleeve, including when Nike last had part of the contract. Now, Nike wants to bring it all in-house with Powers, and they're getting some major push-back from the teams, who prefer the more traditional cuts and fabrics.
