Dooley is taking lots of criticism for not releasing Arnett to play for Michigan or Michigan state. Dooley says there are plenty of other division I schools in the area that aren't direct competition to UT in recruiting or potential opponents.

I am supporting Dooley, because he needs to set the principle that playing at UT is a privilege not a right. DeAnthony's dad has been sick for a long time, and that dude was not in his life anyways. His dad doesnt have much to do with the real reason why he wants to leave UT. Just start thinking and it will come.

I would like to know how releasing the kid to UM or MSU hurts UT. This looks like nothing more than a pissing match to dictate where the kid plays.

There are all kind of crazy theories out there. Truth be told...none really, but the perception is present. Dooley is just making an example of Arnett in case other members on the team have "sick family members". He probably just feels like he can't set the precedent of meeting all Arnett's demands. I don't think there is a complete right or wrong answer here. Everybody is in a compromising position.

The SEC and Big 10 are locked into some bowl games. There is a possibility TN could be playing Mich ST or MI in bowls the next 3 years.
Why release a player too a potential opponent ?

That's the thing. Dooley has been put in an awkward position. I understand what he's trying to do. However, he's going to get burned alive for it by the media and rival institutions.

Like you said, it's a lose-lose.

Would it make that big of a difference?

He lost to UK....one of the worst UK teams I've ever seen. Either he wins this year or he is out. I don't know what a rival institution would say to trump that.

Arnett is a true freshman with some potential on a losing team. Frankly, the media outside of Knox or Saginaw doesn't give a rats ass about either UT or Arnett right now.

This is really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

Oh, I agree that it won't have a huge impact on recruiting. I just don't think Dooley can afford many more black marks, and I believe it would be in his best interest to let the kid go.

If Dooley doesn't win next year he is gone. It is in his best interest to learn how to prepare a team. I'm not a Dooley guy, but this situation is of little consequence.

If it was me I'd release anybody that didn't want to be here, and I'd do it unconditionally.

It sucks for PR but Dooley is 100% right and I'm glad he's standing behind this. I don't know the kids situation or want to get slamed but IMO his dad is NOT the real reason he is leaving UT.

At the same time if hes going back to Mich for his dad then I would venture to say that sitting out a year to play anywhere isn't a big deal and football is not that important at this juncture of his life. He could use that year off to spend quality time with him. However, I don't think that's the real reason. I have no quarrels with Arnett if he leaves but don't hide behind your dads ailment if you are leaving for other reasons. No one knows anything about the situation and people like Bruce Feldman who publish a report on something that they know nothing about is ridiculous and dishonorable.

I dont see what the big deal is. We know where Dooley stands on this issue. Same way he did with BB and AD.I have no issue with him not releasing a player. While I think it puts him in a no win situation. Atleast he has stood firm on his stance on that issue. I agree with other posters that Dooley sees there are more underlying issues than his dad being ill. The main stream media is not going to throw that up in the mix though. They are going to roast the coach to make him look bad. As stated by LEX this is a make or break season for Dooley. I dont think this issue hurts or helps him any.

They happen to do it right in the middle of recruiting season though. If i were the University i'd take issue with Yahoo for running that story. Whether they meant too or not, it makes UT out to look bad for the masses who really don't follow up or educate themselves on a situation. Not good anyway you spin it. Yahoo sucks.
