USPS warns of default as losses mount - Feb. 9, 2011

The USPS, a self-supporting government agency that receives no tax dollars, said it suffered a loss of $329 million in the first quarter of federal fiscal year 2011. That compared with a loss of $297 million a year earlier.
why?

Excluding costs related to retiree benefits and adjustments to workers' compensation liability, the Postal Service said it had net income was $226 million in the first quarter, which ended Dec. 31.
The agency said it will be forced to default on some of its financial obligations this year unless Congress changes a 2006 law requiring it to pay between $5.4 and $5.8 billion into its prepaid retiree health benefits each year.
but at least they're trying to fix it

The USPS has also cut back on hours to save money. The agency expects to eliminate 40 million work hours this fiscal year as part of a plan to save $2 billion.
any bets on number of hours actually cut?

However, the service is currently negotiating new contracts with the American Postal Workers Union and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association, which will probably object to cutting hours.

just eliminate sat mail

want to know why they are against that? because they'll have to layoff some postal carriers.

I would say the guys in my last quote are really against that. But hey, unions are the reason we have weekends right?

is this the same USPS that utgibbs claims is a model of efficiency and that there is simply no good alternative to government provided mail service?

there are 6 post offices within 10 minutes of my house. I asked one of the clerks why they dont consolidate to save money. when an office closes the town loses its name and gets rolled into the larger area. I.E. in my area Hollins is a tiny community. If they closed it, the addresses would become Roanoke.

The result is people raise cain if an office is closed because they feel like they are losing their town identity. I find this interesting as to one reason why they are losing money.

It's going to be difficult for the USPS to survive unless they do cut service. There is less mailed every year due to technology. Eliminating Saturday mail will help but will probably not be enough to keep it afloat. They may need to cut deliveries down to 3-4 days per week. In a few years the USPS will not be needed.

My uncle works for the usps in nyc. His job for a long time was the following: mail carrier reports that a collection box is missing a bolt, my uncle would go out and verify that it was missing a bolt, then write up a work order. Now he is an elevator man. The office has an elevator with 3 floors I think. He sits in a chair and pushes the button for people all day. Post office is where its at.

with everything on bill pay and using ups and fedex for purchases i would be completely fine with getting the mail 3 days a week.

Preposterous. What they need to do is cut their pensions and eliminate their pensions going forward. The U.S. and state governments need to follow the lead of the private sector. They need to discontinue pensions going forward and instead implement defined contribution retirement plans.

Eh, there's enough with business to where I wouldn't mind them staying 5, but there is no need at all for Saturday delivery.

If they could figure out a way to do residential 4 and commercial 5, I would be fine with that.

As a participant in a lucrative pension fund I object to all this talk of cutting pensions - for all of us already with an agreement. Screw the new hires.

If that actually is the case, that would probably change my boyhood address from Chattanooga to Rossvile, GA. :ermm:
