Face it, the brilliance of American business is not perfecting quality of products and services, it is in marketing, advertising, and branding. That is what the Geek Squad is all about. They have niffty language, make their agents wear uniforms and drive the cutest little cars covered with advertising. They say that: "Our mission is to alleviate the world's computer problems, educate people to fearlessly embrace technology and practice the art of human interaction." Sounds so noble. Their real mission is to make money, which is just fine if their services were top quality. But my own experience and that of many others who have shared their pain on many Internet sites is that the youthful Geek Squad agents have nice personalities but lack technical competence. The result is that when customers expose their prized computers to their agents, because they need technical help, they put themselves at risk.

Computers have become so crucial in our lives and when things go wrong it is like becoming seriously ill. So naturally your instinct is to seek professional help. But the Geek Squad does seem to adhere to the wisdom of health professionals: first do no harm.

One of the Geek Squad's standard services is called data transfer. Simply put, copy data from an old computer to a new one. For that they charge plenty. So what might be the worst case scenario or nightmare of having the Geek Squad come to your home to perform this job. Think a minute. What happened to me is that they destroyed the hard drive of my old computer and I lost the hard drive in it and, worse yet, lost over five years of all kinds of data and files.

And an interesting aspect of the Geek Squad business model is that if something bad happens and you have to bring something into a Best Buy store they do not allow their agents to physically take anything back to their store. In my case, I had to take back my old computer box, wait several days and then learn that they had destroyed my hard drive and data.

Were they so sorry that they accepted blame and responsibility? Did these military-style geeks offer compensation? No and no. They acted as if somehow it was a strange coincidence that the hard drive died exactly when their agent had removed it from my old computer, tried but failed to connect it to the new computer (that I bought at Best Buy) and then discovered when he put it back into the old computer that it no longer worked. And let me emphasize that when the agent let me know that he intended to remove the hard drive from my old computer that I was very concerned about the risk of doing that - but he insisted that there was no risk. So much for Geek Squad military-style competence.

Oh, I forgot to mention that initially the agent never showed up at the appointed time; I had to go through the hell of dealing with the military-style 800 number headquarters system to reschedule. Guess what - next time at the appointed time when I expected a knock on the door I got a phone call saying the agent would be two hours late. What happened to all that military precision?

So fellow consumers BEWARE of the slick advertising and military lingo you get from the Geek Squad. They are more like fumbling, incompetent screwups.

Geek Squad is a mixed bag. Some of the agents are very good at what they do, others have no clue.

Amazing considering it should have taken all of 5 minutes to instal the old drive in the new computer. When I say 5 minutes, I literally mean I would have had it installed in the new system with all your data accessible in 5 minutes or less.

Now, if we are talking laptops, it would have taken 20 or 30 minutes to slap it on a network and transfer the files over.

If you ever need this service in the future, look on here. I know there are at least a few poeple that could have walked you through the job. Even through a message board with delays, we could have gotten you through this job in a matter of an hour or two.

That said, its not worth risking having an incompetent moron do a job that you could do yourself (if you had the technical knowledge) at a rather inflated price as well.

Dr. Rosen is right. With all you went through, especially dealing with a reschedule of your appointment, the local computer geeks here on VN could have helped you through it. Seriously, since they didn't take responsibility for the damage they did, what difference would that be had YOU been the one to mess up?

As technically difficult as computer hardware may look, I am a testament to how easy the stuff actually is... I've been building my own PCs since I was in the 4th grade. All it takes is some common sense and a bit of knowledge. You have to common sense... VN can easily be your knowledge base.

Agree w/ the above comments. Once you learn the basics it's pretty easy. Just ask and someone can point you in the right direction.

I don't know that I would want anyone else messing with what's on my comp!

 Ditto. PJ, aren't you the one that put together a nice looking water cooled system a while back? If so, how's she running?

Yeah I did and it's beautiful and quiet. I'm still cranking on my CPU and the water keeps the temps WAY down. I've kind of left the hardware alone for a while since I just moved. But with Conroe coming out, who knows.

Currently running at about 2.7ghz (from 2.2) and 29C idle and 35C at full load. Took it to almost 2.9 but wasn't stable.

I'm waiting to see what AMD does to respond to the new Core Duos... evidently they smoke the current dual core Athlon 64s.

Yeah. I meant Geek Squad for slightly more difficult stuff... Paying for a memory swap = waste of money.

PJ - Are you intel or amd? Just read about the pricing wars going on right now and thinking about picking up a new amd64 x2 chip. Some dropped nearly in half. Then again, with windows 64 as bad as it is, I might just wait till Vista has been out awhile. My current 64bit 3200+ chip seems to be running well.

When AMD releases the 65nm then we'll see. Intel needed a push to get better and AMD gave them that. I'm not ashamed to admit that it does look like Intel is putting out a very good chip.

It will be a GREAT time to get an AMD chip though with all the price drops.

AMD ever since I started building my own. Mine's a 3700+ and it works great for me. Those dual core AMD will be priced low when Intel gets out (great time to buy).

My desktop is still an Athlon XP 2000+. She runs as well as the day I built her. :D

It's all in how you use it right?

Porn doesn't require a great machine! :birgits_giggle:

 I use it as a fileserver for all my favorite TV shows, being sent to my xbox. Generally, you're correct though. I'm not really much of a PC gamer anymore, and I do all my interneting on this nifty laptop.
