USC at 8-4 is now ranked....

Why? Who did we beat this year?

When we beat Georgia this year, at the time it was a signature win.

When we came back against SC last year, it was a signature win.

When we beat SC in Neyland in 2013, it was a signature win.

But after the fact, everyone seems to ask this same question. I'd like to put Southern Cal through the same schedule we had, and see if they are 8-4, and hang with the teams the same way.

No team with 4 losses should be ranked.....End of discussion.

4-loss teams end up ranked every year. Every single year. Sometimes as many as 8 or 10 of them.

Heck, some years, one or more 5-loss teams end up in the rankings.

The pyramid of undefeated, 1-loss, 2-loss, and 3-loss teams can get pretty small after a full season is played out.

At the end of the season (after bowl games) I agree. Just not before that.

Wylo's list would read like this:

Pulling wings off flies.

Grabbing two of something free so the next guy doesn't get any.

Splashing people with water from puddle on the sidewalk when driving by.

Leaving a restaurant w/o tipping.

Coffee enema.

Seeing a coach get fired.

1. I use chopsticks to catch them

2. That's funny. I'll try it.

3. That's even funnier.

4. Only after horrible negawaitress treatment

5. Burns.

6. Only Dooley here and Kiffin @ USC.

Major disrespect towards UT by the pollsters. No way we should be behind UGA or Memphis, and we should be right there with USC...USC and UT are, imo, the best teams with 4+ losses this season, and it's not even close.

Vols need to put a major beat down on whoever we pull in a bowl game to show the nation we're for real. The rest of the nation better watch out bc the Vols are gunning for that top spot next year.

IN spite of what you think this team has not shown that it is very good, though they have finally gotten around to beating the teams that they should beat. We are a long way from being back in the elite group but slowly making progress. According to Butch we are still at least 3 - 4 years away from elite status (since it takes 6 - 7 years to build a program).

Given he is now a veteran among SEC East coaches... His quote could well backfire.

Also, especially if we lose to VaTech and Fuente in Year 1.

If you can find another 8-4 team in history that lost 3 of those 4 games by a combined 13 points against 2 11-1 teams and 1 10-2 team, all while holding the lead late in all of them, I'm all ears.

Replace the word "team" with "coach" and you'd be accurate. In those final moments the decisions make the difference

After watching Florida the last 2 weeks, I still don't know how in the world they beat us. Geez they stink on offense.

We would beat them by 20 now and Bama will beat them by 30+ on Saturday! The AP pollsters finally dropped them after that pitiful performance against FSU. Our time is coming and I am proud of the improvement this TN team has made over the course of this season. Fla has not made the same progress, apparently, so next year should be the end of their run!

GO VOLS!!!

Math is evidently hard for me........Six wins against teams with .500 or better records or bowl eligible teams. I will correct my post. You get a like for helping me out.:hi:

That's Bama math. Their fanbase would find away to make a similar claim haha.

This.

I've been trying to explain this to so many people on here it's ridiculous.

Six of UT's wins came against an FCS school and teams with a losing record. The best win was UGA who has been far less than impressive and just had their long time coach fired. Close losses don't win you extra points and ESPECIALLY if there are 4 of them. All that proves is that you weren't good enough to beat the best teams on your schedule in winnable games.

In fairness, there's always a definable gap (even if it's sometimes an inverted gap) between who you beat, and who beat you. And your team normally should fit somewhere in that gap.

This year, Tennessee doesn't fit in the gap at all. Not according to the AP, Coaches, or CFP, which have us below a team we beat (UGa) ... and not according to Sagarin or ESPN FPI which have us above teams that beat us (FL and Arky).

Purely based on wins and losses, as you're doing, we should be:

  • According to the AP, between 29 (to whom we lost) and 26 (who we beat); inverted, yes, but still that would be our range. Everyone above that range, we lost to, everyone below it, we won over.
  • According to FPI, between 23 (loss to FL) and 18 (win over GA); again, inverted, but a valid gap.
  • According to Sagarin, between 21 and 24 (the only gap that isn't inverted).

On average, that "gap analysis" puts us at 22.5 ... just under Arkansas which averages a 22 mark, and above Georgia who average out at 23.

I'd say that would be a more accurate ranking than where any of the polls have us today.

For what it's worth, while everyone has their own ranking systems and they virtually mean nothing but bragging rights, this guy uses strictly computers and mathematical calculations and his predictions are usually very accurate, his system has UT at 21, just interesting to see where everyone is on here. I'm thrilled with the way we finished but at the end of the day we beat 3 teams with winning records. And none of them are ranked. I struggled even including Weastern Carolina. I look forward to the bowl game and next year but until we beat top caliber teams, I will remain skeptical. Go Vols!

USC's losses are much worse than ours, one was to Washington who is unranked and receiving no votes, and the Oregon loss was a 20 point beatdown and they are ranked 19. Our losses in which we had 4th Q leads in all, are only to rank 2/3/19 and a barely unranked Hogs team. They did however win their division and I believe if we were 8-4 and won SEC East we would probably be ranked 20-25.

Yeah but they are PAC 12. Everybody is sick of the SEC.

The three best conferences in all of football:

AFC, SEC, NFC... in that order.
