USA Today speaking on behalf of many

Last good coach UT had was Majors. UT doesn't have a history of making good hires. If you want Jones gone just look around the mid major programs around the country and see what's available because that's what UT will hire.

This article contradicts itself it's saying coach by instinct and Verne and Danielson was saying by the book you go for 2 with a 12 point lead. Jones went away from the chart and went for the 1 for a 13 point lead. which would give you a tie with UF getting TD and 2 FG's or if you go for 2 and miss... 2 TD's or 1 TD and 2 FG's beat you.
So Jones actually went away from the paint by numbers that time.

It seems like the fever pitch is already reaching the level it was with Dooley in the end. A loss to Arkansas will probably be the last straw. Jones biggest blunder was hiring Debord. The only hope for Jones now would be to fire Debord today but I don't see that happening. That's how it goes when you hire friends. This entire coaching staff is out of their league in the SEC. They could "possibly" learn and improve into a good staff by next year but not if they can't admit their mistakes. Debord is a different story. UT will never win with him calling plays. He's a loser. He will be the death of this program if he remains OC for one more day.

I'm just curious how firing DeBord mid season helps? I guess I don't know how much he is responsible, and who would take his place that's a better option.

I don't understand, we know he's got to go but wait till end of next year to fire him automatically. Why?? If we know now then why wait and prolong this another year, heck right now he has the recruits here, by the end of next year the top recruits might be scared away and the ones that are here might be damaged goods by then, they need real coaching now.

The only difference in Fulmer and Jones.

Both have their buddies coaching for them. It's just Phil had two buddies that could actually coach.

The SEC is a lot better conference than it used to be. Phil had very little competition in the early years. When the other teams started getting better players and coaches it showed how great a coach he was....

Modern day SEC Butch and Phil 7-5 to 9-3 coaches at best.

So Butch isn't going nowhere with the buyout we have in place, But we need to a lot of his staff packing. And get rid of his stupid system that even the tv anouncers can tell if it's a running or passing play

Get rid of Deboard.

Mahoney and ZA have done nothing with the talent they have no improvement at all. Oline continues to play linemen in a position their incapable of playing and name 1 receiver that's improved under ZA

Sad. Jones is a good man. He is an awesome recruiter and in college football that is the key to long term consistency. Yes, he has made some mistakes in game management, but we are talking close losses against well matched competitive teams. We are not 0-4 and blown out by Florida and Oklahoma with a fully developed line-up.. He came in with little SEC caliber talent. He is rebuilding the roster. He now faces a big challenge keeping 19-20 year olds focused on the remaining schedule with our fans outside the castle with fires and pitchforks. They read and listen. The prevailing wisdom of this board would have fired Johnny Majors with his 0-6 start in 1988. They would have benched Manning after losing to Memphis or for interceptions against Spurrier's Gators. This board does not reflect the mental toughness and resiliency we expect from the team. Recriminations are rarely helpful. They will have to learn and adapt, but let that process play out.

With 8 games remaining and 7 in conference there is much left to play for and this team can compete now with anybody. Coming into this season 8-9 wins was realistic, but the hype took over. The media is always excited and often wrong in that process - ask Gus Malzahn, Charlie Strong, Steve Sarkesian, Brett Bielama and Steve Spurrier. Fickle and immediate gratifications are the ever present demand. Redemption will come from a win where we should not have one: Georgia, Alabama

This team has to hang in there and continue to compete. Good things will come if the do. We are so close; let's not set that process back 3 years.

Pretty spot on...but nothing new.

Tennessee's Butch Jones should coach with common sense, not off a card

"After the game, Jones defended his decision to go for the extra point, saying he referred to a chart that's "standard" in football.

If that's what the chart says, light it on fire. How about using your brain once in awhile?

But that's Butch Jones, the consummate paint-by-numbers guy who even coaches in cliches. On Tennessee's opening drive in Week 2 against Oklahoma, he drew heavy (and deserved) criticism for kicking a field goal on fourth down from inside the 1-yard line. Tennessee ultimately blew a 17-0 lead and lost in overtime, playing conservative offensively the entire second half."

I'm not sure the fire Debord is all that warranted. If you score 27 on a team that just scored 14 on Kentucky that should be good enough to win. I think it's more our defense.
I for one believe if Magitt had not got hurt against Oklahoma we win that one and if he played against UF I have to believe the D would not have given up all five 4th down conversion and we beat UF and are 4-0.... we are that close.
Losing a 5th year Senior leader has hurt our D.

So what did you think of Johnny at 0-6 in '88?

Booger put the beat down on BJ, Finebaum and Marcus are chomping at the bit to rake ole BJ over the coals.

Good company you are keeping there. Booger cites a stat from the first 4 games and all of sudden he is an objective genius rather than a Bayou Bengal homer taking a shot.. Everybody knows Findbalm is Vol friendly.

I agree about Maggitt. That was a huge blow. It just sucks to see the team deflate after losing one player (I know it's not jut Curt. The other defensive injuries only compounded the impact of losing #56). JRM has done a great job of stepping up.

Id like to see Hurd Be a more vocal leader. Pick up some of the swagger that Dobbs seems to have lost (though he played tough yesterday, it's obvious the passing game is lacking confidence, and the WRs not being involved...).

Wow! Its almost like VN wrote that article.

I think its a good thing. Jones is being called to the carpet nationally and by someone outside of the Vol faithful.

How will he respond?!?

Im not on the "rid Jones" bandwagon. He needs another another yr. But no one can defend the teo losses this season. Questionable calls and lack of execution.

There needs to be a catalyst like last yr, but I dont think BJ has the guts to make the tough calls. Hes just too loyal and seemingly cant admit when hes wrong. Clearly, there are some wro g butts and in the wrong seats.

Malzahn is proving to be a bit of a fraud as well. No thanks.

I'm as disappointed as anybody, perhaps even more critical than most...but we can't fire Jones this year. He'll get until the end of 2016 and if he can't win at that point, which I think is the case, he'll be out at that point, and I'll be grateful to him for getting our program rebuilt is so many ways. The talent will be replenished, the APR no longer an issue, the job much, much more attractive for a top tier coach. Hopefully we'll get one then who can be the complete package who knows how to use the great pieces Jones has assembled here and put em to use in the right way to win games. Jones just isn't that guy.

If Alabama would have waited one more year they likely would not have had the opportunity to hire Nick Saban. Coaching fires and hires have to be strategically planned. Hell, if no elite attainable coaches are realistically availabale to take the job after the 2016 season, we should just wait. Hiring an unproven coach and realiizing the market is bare is not something you take on AFTER your coach is let go. Fire coach Jones once you have a better candidate to replace him with.

Butch is done. He is working out the next 18 months unfortunately.

But he's dead man walking next year.

The way he's coaching... his win total this year could make it very tough for UT's leadership and boosters to keep him. EVERY game is in play the way he's coaching... except maybe UNT.

His best chance of winning is actually being behind in the 2nd half... which will prevent him from "managing the game".... or playing not to lose. In close games, the team with the most momentum in the 4th qtr will usually win. He handed momentum to UF and OU on a silver platter.

Maybe someone should talk him into playing every 4th qtr like he's trailing by 10 points....?

The real problem is when Butch starts to "Manage the Game":eek:lol:

For every Saban or Myer, there are what...20-40 busts at the head coach position? I agree with your approach though.

This was a rough loss for Butch and the vols. This is just a product of a young coach and a young team who is right on the precipice of winning big games. The real truth is UT is getting better. They are actually in the games, but the losses hurt because they play so well in the first 3 quarters. They just need to learn how to finish games. Be pleased with progress even if it is slow. If Butch is fired this program will become a permanent loser.

11 Straight to FL, how many straight to BAMA...and last GA win was by Kiffin.

Please share what you are smokin! Butch is not the long term solution to TN football, not even close.
