USA Today on Vols Sweet 16

Even though they again say they knew the criticism and took an US against the world approach, will there will still be posters acting like the team didnt feed off it?

A team turning negative BS into motivation and having a coach that led regardless speaks volumes!...then succeed...hats off to the team and CCM. Go VOLS! :)

Yes. Read the headline "Cuonzo Martin, Tennessee ignore doubters, stay course to reach Sweet 16."

NOT "Cuonzo Martin, Tennessee decide to try harder because of doubters, reach Sweet 16 because they tried extra-hard."

Direct quotes:

Luckily for our guys, they stayed the course, didn't get caught up in the negativity and continued to get better not only as basketball players, but as men," Martin said. "That's probably the biggest thing I'm proud of — and their love for each other has really grown as a unit. … They took a lot of lumps, bumps along the way."

"There are no magic tricks," Martin said. "We haven't changed anything. There's nothing different. They just completely bought in and understood in order for us to be successful, this is what we have to do — and they're doing it."

Agreed. Here's a piece on how negativity typically influences people:

I have to disagree. Criticism can be a motivator. When close to 40,000 fans were asking for the coach to be replaced, only a mole could ignore that something was not right with this team. If it took negative criticism to bring out the best in this team, so be it. No matter what you say or believe, something clicked within this team. We saw snippets of a solid team throughout the season but they just could not put it together. But they have now - GBO!

You left out Maymon saying they took an us against the world mindset. And jrich saying they heard it all. Wtf do you expect the coach to say? That it bothered them and they now have to find new motivation?

Begs the question: Why did it take his players almost 3 seasons to finally buy in?
Maybe we needed a petition last season about Feb 15th.

it's still not just all about buying in either. Gameplans, etc have changed. You don't go from tight and low scoring games to blowing people out and scoring almost 80 by running the same gameplan we had vs the aggies or first Vandy.
-Martin made lineup and sub changes
-They played some zone
-Moore got on the floor more, and wasn't during our worst play
-he faced up Stokes more after not giving him the opportunity off the dribble at all early in the year
-guys attack the basket earlier
-we aren't running 20 seconds off the shot clock with wasted motion that serves no purpose 35 feet out, then feed the ball to players where they don't want it, like Stokes in a doubleteam with 10 seconds on the clock on the baseline.
-we aren't turning the ball over 35 feet out when trying to start the offense with a wing pass
-we are getting it over and feeding the post asap to get the offense going
-Stokes has had some clearouts even with him only on one side of the court.
-We aren't calling bad timeouts that zap momentum and lead to losing games
-We have more emotion on the sideline and court
-we are running more ball screens for Barton and allowing him to set up the offense more and get the ball to the right players/matchups/who's hot

All of those are + changes that CM and staff have made during this turnaround. I'm sure there are more, but it's not just buying in, not just the damn petition, and not just coaching better. It's all of it.

You should start a petition for UT to hire you to replace CCM. You are an expert after all and by signing the BBB petition you've already helped the Vols win games.

Yet Martin still claims they haven't changed anything.
So players just weren't doing what was being taught?

somebody gets it, but if discussing what's happening on the floor happens to be too much for you to understand, keep reading and learn something. You have plenty of company.

Some of us that don't possess the technical savvy you have appreciate the observations.
I know somethings different but Now as I watch I can actually notice some of the changes that have been made.
Appreciate the break down.

He's going to talk like a coach. There's not really debating much of what I posted about the changes and they are obvious just by watching a few minutes.
I'd be fine if people did have valid arguments against the improvements I've said he has made and have a debate about the game on the court, but nobody has. Only responses have been smartass responses from children, or pics of a cartoon, or denials that the team didn't rally, though Maymon is quoted as "us against the world" and somebody even brought up Dooley from '11 because he couldn't debate what I posted.

no, it means the posters that have been saying the team didn't rally around the petition and negativity are dumbasses. That's what it means.

Does this make you feel stupid?

Earlier this season, more than 36,000 Tennessee fans signed an online petition, asking the school to bring back former coach Bruce Pearl. Now, Pearl is at Auburn and those same fans are singing Martin's praises as the Vols return to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2008.

So Cuonzo's team rallied because of the petition, not because his team was 16-11? Don't you think they wanted to qualify for the NCAA tournament as much as the fans? They rallied because they had to, not because of an asinine petition. As much as I love the coaching turnover of our football program the last 10 years, I would prefer to avoid it with our basketball program.

I'm just giving my opinion of what I see on the court and I still break down games. I've watched the last few games multiple times, often rewatching and only focusing on one or two players on both ends.

Like I've said, if someone wants to talk about what is or isn't happening on the court, let's talk about it. Maybe I've missed something. Maybe some see the ball go through the net and that's all they know. LT1 is like that. So is BOP. I watch everything else.
