U.S. pilot scares off Iranians with 'Top Gun'-worthy stunt: 'You really ought to go home' - Washington Times

The Aviationist reports that in March a U.S. MQ-1 drone came close to being intercepted by an Iranian F-4 Phantom combat plane, but the Iranian aircraft stopped short after a warning by an American pilot.

“He [the Raptor pilot] flew under their aircraft [the F-4s] to check out their weapons load without them knowing that he was there, and then pulled up on their left wing and then called them and said ‘you really ought to go home,’” Gen. Welsh said.

I'm confused. We're sending F-22s to provide cover for MQ-1s? I thought the whole point of UAVs was to reduce risk to human pilots?

Awesome story and it's hilarious that Iran is still using the F-4 platform. What were they using a decade ago, P-51s?

A decade ago they actually still had F14's that we sold to the Shah, but they have finally run out of spare parts for them it seems.

I saw an older baseball buddy of mine at the store the other day and he was with his 90 year old widowed mom. He has lost two of his siblings thru the years. I talked with him and his mom. He was in from out of town. The reason I tell the story in this forum is he was wing commander in Iraq war and was at the Pentagon when it was attacked. He is now a retired Brigadier general . Small world. Sure no one in that little store knew him from Adam.
