Uros Plavsic Olympic Note

You rocking dumb take after dumb take in multiple threads.....
How was that a dumb take? two things can be true at once. Most of the Team USA guys were playing for the vacation. Some like KD, Steph and Lebron were playing for legacy. I am sure there was some element of pride but not the same as these other teams they have mostly been playing for national team since they were in their early teens like 11 or 12. Joel Embid literally flipped a 3 sided coin and picked the winning squad.

Just because these guys are not necessarily playing for national pride does not mean any other team really had a chance at gold. The talent is just overwhelming in this case comparable to the dream team. This team is actually better talent-wise when you take into account the situations and not the names. Bird was a chiropractor nightmare and Magic was retired and they had Christian Leattner. Even if we say ya know what lets concede 1-11 Derrick White>Laettner. But the talent gulf between the USA back then and the world was much larger.

Serbias fight shows just how good the guys over there are and even though Uros didn't get a lot of PT it is not so much a knock on him but respect for how good Jokic, Petrusev and Milutinov are. Looking forward to the spanking we put on France tomorrow and hope Uros gets some PT against Germany for the bronze. Wouldn't he be the first Vol Olympic Medalist for men's BB?

correction: nope Allan Houston and Ernie Grunfeild both have golds.
Crazy random factoid I discovered while checking some stuff out.. Pat Summit in 1976 while head coach at UT Won a Silver medal as a player in the Olympics. She also actually coached the team to a gold in 84.

He had multiple dumb takes across several threads that showed no knowledge of professional basketball in 2024. I just responded to 1 of them....

That 4th qtr defense yesterday proved they're playing for something. That was pure grit and determination. Yeah, they might be loving their vacation but the want gold too

Legacy.. for LeBron Steph and especially KD its legacy. For Lebron this would be his third gold pushing him past Jordan. For Curry his first and for KD he would get his 4th and further cement his points record for us players and can move into 7th place if he scores 7 points 30 will get him past Ginobli to 6th. if he plays one more Olympics he could get 5 gold medals and move into 3rd passing Pau Gasol assuming Patty Mills stops playing (they are both 35). I am not saying playing for America is not part of their motivation representing your country but its different. I don't know how to explain it. Its more like my side of town is better than yours NBA vs the world type stuff. A lot of these other players on these teams if they win the Gold or even medal is some cases they are set for life. Winning the gold will have a marginal effect for most of these players past the 6 months or so follow-up of ad campaigns. The most life-changing thing will be if one of them gets on a Wheaties box. Which does not really carry the same cachet it did back in the day (who even still eats wheaties? funny enough I do but other than that). Trust me you win a gold for South Sudan in basketball they'd at least give you a 4 year get out of jail for anything up to assault. For someone like France you'd get a lifetime supply of deodorant and razors if you don't Medal that's why they are playing so hard.

Nice post. I think you could put together a much less recognizable team, but one that might not have early, mental lapses, and win the gold in a more convincing fashion. With the exception of Jokic and a couple of other guys, most of the international teams' rosters of NBA players are solid role players. I'm surprised Canada was disappointing. They should have medaled

France is a problem Wemby is a game changer for sure. They snuck up on Canada and Germany both favored over them. Australia is also sneaky good. I think Serbia might have the most NBA and former NBA players of anyone but the USA and Canada and young guys at that.

The Olympic Men's basketball tournament is ultra competitive. Much more parity than 30-40 years ago

I'm not the least bit interested in seeing guys like LeBron and Durant play for a 3rd Gold metal or whatever. Those guys already have endless riches and trophies. I'd much rather see a team of guys like Dalton Knecht , Rob Dillingham and Zach Edey go out there and play their hearts out for the US of A

Edey is Canadian...

Times 1000 for sure. I honestly think if we don't send teams of this caliber every Olympics we will get beaten. there is still a huge gap between out top top players and the rest. the gap between their best vs our 2nd or third best which is what they had been sending lately. Unless we build a pipeline. We could legit say get a group of young players from the NBA and Gleague after each Olympics ends and have them commit to 4 years of playing for USA basketball every summer. Then when the time comes for Olympics you take your top 8 for that group throw in 4 super stars and we would be untouchable.

the fact that most of the guys on these national teams have played together for years even decades. They play for their countries every summer. So their teams have cohesion that can overcome talent to some extent. Did you know who Jock Landale was before these Olympics? I only remember him because his name is weird. I know he has bounced around the league for a few years. Bro has showed out for Australia with Patty Mills outshining even Josh Giddey. They will both go right back to being the 8th-9th man on their teams until 2028. Not a single NBA coach has changed how much they are gonna play anyone based on Olympic performance. This USA team in my opinion as too talented. Instead of taking 10 studs and 2 role players they should be going half and half. Make those 6 superstars your starters plus a wing 6th man and the other 6 are the utility pieces.

And they wouldn't make it out of group stage against Pros from other countries

If he wants to play for Canada, fine. I was just making a point. I know the Olympics are set up to where guys can play fot several countries. If your grandparent is from a country, you can play for them even if you have never stepped foot in the country. My point is that non NBA guys should represent the USA

I’d be kinda interested if they decided to put an age limit on it like they did for Men’s soccer this time around. Was kinda fun watching a bunch of young guys.

That said, there’s no way in the world I want to go back to sending our b-team when everyone else is sending their A-team. That’s just stupid.

Would be cool if all countries would agree to alternate.

Hate to break it to you but most college guys are "professionals" now.....

Yeah….Nah. Not if we want to be competitive.

Never, ever, gloat before the end of a game. Especially professional basketball
Especially when you’re gloating about the team you cheer for losing. There are no bigger losers on this board than those predict Tennessee (or the dream team in this case) to lose and then come back to brag about it.

Nothing wrong with predicting us to lose, it happens. But coming back to brag about it (regardless of before or after final whistle) is behavior reserved for shîthead losers.

Actually 0 of them are professional players. They’d have to get paid by the school they play for to qualify as a professional. Getting paid by a Knoxville bakery makes them professional spokesperson, but not a profession athlete.
