Speak to the team and remind them about the 85 squad who went down and delivered a southern-fried but-whoopin' to the Miami Hurricanes in the Sugar Bowl, against the same kind of odds...even with a an unheralded back-up QB against the Heisman Trophy winner. How's that for a real David vs Goliath matchup? The Hurricanes were supposed to have all of this superior talent and speed. Nothing unlike this one.

I think last weeks game is recent enough evidence that the team that comes to play wins...all this ridiculous hoopla from the media is just that. Hot air and speculation that's worth about as much as a hot cup of jack squat.

If CLK helps the dinged up OL (Vlad, Sullins, McClendon) with a Max protect scheme much of the game, I think Crompton can actually have a surprisingly decent game.

And if we can open some holes in the running game (which is not such a stretch since our offense did it against our 1st team defense repeatedly in fall camp), I think a lot of folks around the country who have shot off at the mouth themselves....predicting a beatdown and such...are going to initiate the inaugural "National Shoe Leather Eating Festival"...whether it's an NCAA sponsored event or an official holiday remains to be seen.

"Pride goes before destruction" as the proverb says. Sure are a lot of Gators and gator fans full of pride and arrogance...perfect weather for a fall!

i might just be hammered right now, but tennessee has never been so deprived of talent and faced such a team ripe with talent ever before. i know a lot of people in here want to tell happy, nice, christmas-like bedtime stories, but guys, this florida team is one of the best teams of all time. on both sides of the ball. i'm not trying to piss on anyone's new shoes or anything, but it's going to take several miracles and a voodoo cast for us to win this one.

Anything is possible. However, comparing 1985 and this team is apples/oranges. 1985 was a very good football team. While D. Dickey was no Peyton Manning he was no Jonathan Crompton either. If we had D. Dickey under center I would think there would be a slim chance for a W. With Crompton there is simply no way. He is a detriment to the Vols and am asset to the gators.

You must not have seen Dickey play... He could not throw the deep pass at all.. the announcers at the Sugar Bowl said he was throwing nickle and dime passes and the only thing he had was he had heart. He could not even manage a score against Alabama after Robinson got hurt. Dickey was the closest thing to Crompton I have seen wear orange :pinch:

Disagree. The late 70s Tennessee teams had little talent, much less than we have now (and one of those managed to spank a good Notre Dame team on the road). Take it with a grain of salt, but our core group of players comes from 2 top 5 and another top 10 recruiting class. Its not like we're Prairie View A&M.

I'm not calling an upset, but it wouldn't be the biggest in the history of sports either.

Overall our team is not devoid of talent other than at QB; in addition, the O-line spot is thin. We're lucky to get this game early in the season while not being overly banged up.

No, Dickey may not have had a lot of talent--but he certainly did not play scared. And that's why the Vols are bad with crompton: QB is a huge position, and the UT QB at his core is not a confident football player--not when the gameday lights come on. Talent is important, of course, but you gotta have some rocks to play football--and I'm not sure Crompy has the rocks or the head for the game. We'll find out today for sure.
