Some observations on the weekend that was:

1. It was fun to beat Alabama at their own game.
2. Mike Shula has no feel for the college game. It's not the NFL. You don't win games kicking 18 yard field goals.
3. Alabama is playing the wrong tailback.
4. It's nice to be somewhere that has actual seasons.
5. Air Force didn't help UT's cause by losing to one of the 10 worst teams in the country.
6. Yeah, Cal's a real juggernaut. Beating a mediocre team at home in overtime really shows what a powerhouse they are.
7. I was elated to see Oregon exposed as the sham they are. They're the Pacific Time Zone version of Virginia Tech. A garbage program that beats its chest about not getting enough respect, then goes out and shows why they don't deserve any. I love watching teams get what they karmatically deserve.
8. The offense Colorado put on the field Sturday night in Norman is as bad as I've ever seen. Dan Hawkins should be paying his salary for this season back to CU.
9. The Vols can forget receiving any help from Georgia Saturday. The Bulldogs would struggle to beat Florida Atlantic, let alone the Gators.
10. I had the opportunity to meet and converse with a couple of players last night at Nama. If they are indicative of the type of young men filling the roster, the university is well represented.

agree with 1 and 2 completely...Jimmy johns i thought was hurt and that's why he didn't play more?

no. 6...some would probably say the same about us struggling to beat AF and a down Bama team....

no. 8...i give you Mississippi St as a challenger. The previous 5-6 games they've played this year was an excercise in futility.
9. we can hope...but i'm more worried about beating south carolina...
10...good to hear.

Some Alabama fans I know aren't even sure why Darby is getting the majority of the carries over Johns. Goes back to their displeasure with the offense as a whole I'd imagine.

Of course, it's all dirt if your offensive line is non-existant.

A couple of other items:
1. The Bobby Bowden era in the ACC is officially over. They're no better than the fifth best team in the league.
2. If Clemson wins at VA Tech Thursday, the ACC will be staring a PR Doomsday square in the face. If the "U" somehow wins in Atlanta, they'll have a stranglehold on a trip to the ACC title game. I bet John Swofford just loves that possibility.

i never even thought about the GT/Miami game still meaning something..but you're right....

that would be unbelievable....and even worse...what if Miami pulled it out and won the whole damn thing?

i guess the old saying Thugs=championships gets proved true once again....

While Clemson made it plain that the Wreck was a bit of a house of cards, I still think GT can handle whats left of Miami.

Strange that this was not much of an actual hurricane season either....

I tend to agree. I can't see the "U" beating even a mediocre team on the road.

kind of makes you wonder what all the hub bub was all about for the FSU/Miami game early in the season....14 ESPN channels devoted to one frickin' game........

and you know next year it will be the same thing.

I don't like Miami or FSU, and i love the fact that both are struggleing...but the one big downer about them BOTH struggling is that opens the door for Florida to sway some recruits....i can see UF capitalizing on their demise for the next couple of years.

Let's see who the coaches are in Coral Gables and Tallahassee before we concede recruiting dominance to the Gators.

short term...that's all. i'm not looking at Florida putting their foot on the throats of the two...but short term wise, Florida could reep some pretty good benefits.

and with the raw amount of talent in the state, there's still plenty to go around.

i could see that...assuming he's available, and they fire coker....

is Schiano a viable candidate for UNC? Bunting resigned today..i'd expect them to go after someone hot right now....and Schiano fits the bill.

actually though, after thinking about it, the question probably though should read....is UNC a viable option for Schiano......?

Just a gut feeling, but I think UNC is going to really make a concerted effort to jumpstart their program. With FSU and the "U" in disarray, there's an opportunity to really make waves in the ACC. My guess is that the Tar Heels will make the commtment to be a major player. I can't imagine that Schiano wouldn't at least talk to them.

Me neither...but the talk shows here have already started throwing around names like Schiano's and ButchDAvis....but realistically, i can't see either of them coming to UNC.

the truth is the truth...they simply don't care enough about football to make that kind of commitment. And bunting resigned, he wasn't fired. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall, but up until the announcement, the general opinion was that Bunting SHOULD be fired, but that he probably wouldn't be fired....

They cared a lot when Mack Brown was winning 10 games. I think the Heel fans would be all over a winning team.

I though Bunting did a pretty decent job up until this year. They've gone to a few bowls recently. They managed to beat FSU and Miami in recent years. One year, they knocked off a top 5 undefeated Miami team. I remember it well, because UNC's Gerald Sensabaugh predicted a win. The announcers were pretty much making fun of his bold prediction. After the game they really had to eat it. It was hilarious.

yeah, they would...so long as it was winning...but it still isn't the most important thing in town, and it never will be. And not that that's a bad thing, since it is UNC basketball....that's a nice alternative.

I look at UNC like i do us...just the reverse. We, in general, i know there are bball die hards out there, love basketball when we're winning....last year was great, and as long as it continues support will be overwhelming. Same with UNC football....mack brown did a great job while he was there....and was loved by all. And still left for TX...where football matters most.

UNC has that reputation, and the only way it changes if they really, really make a splash with the next HC....he'd have to have the personality and ego to embrace the fans....someone that won't sit 2nd fiddle to Roy...and then he has to win. a lot.

If they go get some coordinator that they've never heard of...they'll be looking for another coach in 3 years.

A lot, but not all of it. As I've stated here before, there are a few former 'Canes I consider friends. That said, there is a certain influence those guys exert that isn't always positive. Butch Davis handled it by banning them from the sidelines during games. That helped immensely. I just don't think Coker is a strong enough personality to avoid being overrun by the outside influences. He's a good man and was a decent offensive coordinator. He has no business being the head coach at a program with the "U's" history of success.
