***Discussion of the Todd Raleigh hire begins at post #14

tfpOnline updated the baseball coaching search this morning.
It is a short article. I'll post in entirety. Thanks Gentry Estes...

The search for Tennessee's new head baseball coach picked up in earnest this week, and a hire is expected in the next few days.
UT athletic director Mike Hamilton met with multiple candidates recently in Atlanta. Among those he reportedly interviewed were Michigan coach Rich Maloney, Troy coach Bobby Pierce and former UT assistant and minor league manager Bill Mosiello.
Other plausible candidates include three coaches -- Louisville's Dan McDonnell, UC Irvine's Dave Serrano and Rice assistant David Pierce -— still involved in the College World Series as of Tuesday afternoon.

Candidates in Atlanta were told to expect a decision by Friday.

Maloney, 42, just finished his fifth season in charge of the Wolverines. They went 42-19, reached a third consecutive NCAA tournament and eliminated top-ranked Vanderbilt in regional play. A former shortstop in the Atlanta Braves organization, Maloney coached Ball State from 1996 to 2002 before being taking over at Michigan.
The Detroit Free Press first reported Maloney's interview with Tennessee in Tuesday's editions.
Bobby Pierce, 48, led Troy to a 34-27 record and second straight NCAA appearance this past season. The Trojans' RPI was high enough for them to be selected as an at-large NCAA team. He attended Alabama and is a former Crimson Tide assistant coach.
Mosiello, 42, coached Vols legend Todd Helton in college and remains close friends with the Colorado Rockies All-Star. Mosiello spent the past season as an assistant at Southern Cal, where he landed after four years in the New York Yankees organization. He went 129-98 in nearly two seasons as manager of the Single-A Charleston (S.C.) RiverDogs.
College of Charleston coach John Pawlowski, another reported candidate, said Tuesday afternoon he has not interviewed.
"I've not talked to them this week," Pawlowski said. "I've not heard too much on it, so I'm not sure what direction they're going."
Former Vols assistant Serrano has been considered a front-runner for the job, but he may be hurt by questions about his academic past. UC Irvine's Web site says Serrano earned his bachelor's degree from "Trinity College and University," which is the name of a former institution in South Dakota and a current one in Spain. Neither is accredited. Both are known to have offered degrees for purchase with no classes.
Serrano has declined comment on the Tennessee opening during his squad's postseason run, which continued into Tuesday night's CWS elimination game against Arizona State.
McDonnell's Louisville team, the first in school history to reach the CWS, was eliminated 3-1 by North Carolina on Tuesday. The 36-year-old is in his first year with the Cardinals after six seasons as an assistant at Ole Miss.
David Pierce, 44, has spent his entire 20-year coaching career in his home state of Texas. He has been named one of four finalists for the head coaching job at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Hamilton has been tight-lipped about the search but remains interested in more than one CWS participant, according to comments from another prospective coach.
"Some of the people who are in consideration for that position, they're still in the College World Series. That's at least what I'm hearing and being told," Coastal Carolina's Gary Gilmore told the Myrtle Beach Sun News last week. "Schools like that, they're great institutions, they're looking for a big-name guy, an Omaha guy. They might get that coup. If not, it might filter down to someone like me."

And what the heck is this all about?....

UC Irvine's Web site says Serrano earned his bachelor's degree from "Trinity College and University," which is the name of a former institution in South Dakota and a current one in Spain. Looks like Friday, maybe Saturday, and the baseVols will have a new coach...

i do find it interesting that he's got some guys on that list that are from some pretty steady programs.....Rice and UCI.....

i just can't help but think that if this is the approach that he's taking with a baseball coach, that it would be no different when/if a HFC candidate list is entertained......i really think MH will not settle for anything less than the "best".

He certainly seems to do a good job of keeping a current 'possibles' list. For all sports. I think the thing I have been most impressed with these last years, is Hamilton's apparent interest in the overall health of the athletic department. My relative inexperience with such devotion in an AD at Tennessee may have me fooled about the quality of job MH is doing. Still, I'm impressed.

He is the first in a long line that is not interested in hiring one of the "Home Boys". Hamilton is running a first class operation!

Not to start a Fulmer post but it would be interesting to watch who MH brought in for interviews if CPF retired or something. It would probably define his career as an AD.

Yep. Ran off Rod to hire a guy not much above .500 as a head coach at WCU. Clemson ties though. Hmmm?!?

Not exactly a front page hire. Still, it sounds as though the guy has real potential...

Todd Raleigh,from WVLT
Raleigh, who returned to his alma mater in 2000, led an impressive four-year resurgence at Western, going from an 8-22 league record and missing the SoCon tournament in 2000 to a SoCon-best 22-8 league record and NCAA Regional finalist in 2003. In the process, he was tabbed the 2002 Southern Conference Coach of the Year and the 2003 North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year.

On the face of it, this would seem to lower Hamilton's batting average a bit. Time could make MH look like a genius though.

This does lower his batting average IMO big time. CBP was a grandslam but this is a strike out

You know this how? The guy is a strike out and he has not even gotten his first season under his belt? There were a lot of people that weren't that excited when CBP was announced.

IMO that is BS. Pearl had just went to the sweet 16 when he got hired and was impressive in the NCAA tournament.

Raleigh was 182-162 at Western Carolina. IMO that same record at UT would have gotten him fired.

This coaching hire is a suprise. I thought they would of gotten Serrano, Pierce, or Mahloney.

I'm not prepared to jump to the defense of Hamilton or Raleigh on this yet. It sounds as though that record encompasses some early struggles turning the Western program around though. The guy's only HC experience is at Western. Eight years, a moribund program winds up in the NCAAs twice['03,'07]... maybe there's something there?

Still, I can't get past the notion that we could have done way better. Surely Hamilton was not refused by all of the bigger names he spoke with...

at WCU that's pretty good. before he got there they were in the bottom of the So. Con. In just his 2nd year they were 3rd in the conference. In his 8 season at WCU they were in the top 3 of the conf. 5 of those seasons.
