but... I thought... but... you mean he's not in demand to be a coach somewhere?

It has to be some sort of PR position. Fulmer has been a great ambassador for the university and will be invaluable as a full time PR person.

He probably turned down all kinds of head coaching jobs in college and the NFL. He's just staying at UT because he's a true Vol, and recognizes that Lane's probably not a very good storyteller.

Don't worry his dicipiles will be in this thread before too long letting you know of his "Current Market Worth" as a coach.

If Kiffin makes Fulmer the punt returner, then he's effing out of his mind.

I heard he got in pretty deep talks with Bud Adams about taking over when they could finally get that bum Fisher out of the head spot. It came down to what you said, story telling ole' big orange tales.

No ouch to it. Kiffin is the Head Football Coach. They do not need Phil poking his nose around there stirring anything up.
I was just saying ouch to the dig on Phil, but you're right. It's kinda like, you don't need your ex hangin around if you've done went and remarried,it just doesn't fit into the situation.

I don't think Fulmer will cause any kinds of problems as far as the football team is concerned. In all likelihood it's a good hire for the university.

Don't remember exactly what was said, but last week George Plaster interviewed Mike Hamilton and Hamilton said at that time they didn't have an exact position laid out yet if Fulmer was to take it, but it would likely be largely a fund raising type of position.

Programs on the level of the Vol program have not been knocking down the door to get to him. That is an honest assessment of how Fulmer is viewed in the college football world.

It has been reported that MSU showed interest in Fulmer. This whole episode goes to show that the University of Tennessee has been good for Fulmer. It gave him a national stage that he was lucky to have, just as, on some level we were lucky to have him.

I would say that the Pres. is keeping him around in case Kiffin doesn't work out.... That way he could replaced Hamilton with Fulmer and let him hire a new coach..That is the bad side of the hire.. The good side may be that he can still meet with recruits when and if they come to visit.. Like it or not he is/was a "heck" of a recruiter

my thoughts exactly. like it or not, hamilton is probably the next one to go if Kiffin doesn't work out. I am very excited about CLK and think we will get back to competing with him, but if he bombs, Hamilton is likely gone. Any small amount of face time he can get with recruits will probably do nothing but help, provided its agreed upon and arranged by CLK. I also thought that fulmer would one day end up as the ad, or assistant ad.
I think its great he's sticking around.

No chance. The days of football coaches being put in the AD's office are long gone.

My hope is that Phillip is just keeping himself "on ice" so he will be available for the Florida job next year when Urban leaves to replace Weiss at ND.

Actually, I think he ends up at South Carolina. He's a perfect fit for their hiring model down in Columbia.
