Unlimited Transfers are Here.

It's going to be really hard on coaches.

Once they recruit a player from early high school, they basically won't stop recruiting them until they finish their college eligibility or enter the draft.

If you look at Heupel, he's recruiting with the right intentions that will resonate with the kids who sign with us.

I wonder if individual conferences will still be able to have any rules regarding transfers? I know the SEC generally tries to block players from transferring within the conference, especially if they are going to play that particular the upcoming year.

Cannot say for certain this is a death knell, and I don't know enough of the back stories to make an informed comment on the bastardization of the game we all have loved for so long......But if one were going to set out to destroy college football, something so powerful and with such momentum from the 90's into the new century, the ONLY way it could have been done was thru changing the rules that set some guidelines on a player's mobility or ties to a school. There are some who say this was the hidden agenda all along. I do think there are power brokers (i.e. politicians perhaps) out there who have always hated the game and dreamed of killing it. Me, I don't know enuf about the movers and shakers behind the scenes to have a fact-based comment. But the death of this game which seems close upon us could not have happened without the NCAA's loss of direction, and abdication of power. And who engineered that? Not sure, but it WAS engineered, my instincts tell me.
Did someone see that a NFL coach or rep of some kind recently predicted the NFL would become an enhanced version of flag football someday soon to stop the injuries? Good Lord, if true.

The problem is and always has been that there i no opportunity to go straight to the league out of high school. College ball was meant to be something for kids to do in their free time while taking classes, now it’s semi pro ball.

I believe that the stability will occur naturally. There will be, as we see now, more transferees than places to land and a hoard of young athletes will be without a team, and worse, without an education. That is fine as it will eventually come to light that entering the portal is not the choice of champions, but rather a pre-curser to likely negative consequences.

I do not believe that the sky is falling.

I think this would benefit a offensive minded coach more than a defensive minded coach. It is a whole lot easier to plug and play on offense than it is on defense.

You're not wrong. In the past, a non-performer or guy who didn't fit in the culture or behave himself basically had to be tolerated. The HC could pull his scholarship but the image of the University was on the line. There were also risks in recruiting for HC's who cut guys. The portal as you point out has given coaches cover to tell guys it is time for them to go find another opportunity.... or try.
