I'd say Foster will start. I can't see Coker being our go-to guy for an entire season. I'm not sure he can handle that kind of abuse. He'll still get touches every game, though. I don't think bringing in a guy like Graig Cooper would have hurt our running back situation at all.

I agree that Foster will start. Coker will still get plenty of touches. Wouldn't mind seeing him get a couple of returns, although I think some of the newcomers should a shot.

I know Graig personally and his father. Tennessee was high on his list but the talk of converting him to db drove Graig away. Graig is a great kid, very mature & intelligent for his age. He has vision, speed, very agile and very football savy. Our backfield is very crowded so his staus as being a rb was uncertain. One thing I love about UT is that we were honest in his recruting process by letting him know that his position as a rb might change to db.

If our OL doesn't go out there and block effectively, there is basically no difference between Foster earing TFL or Hardesty's straight ahead for 1 yard or so, our running game is still pathetic.

That sounds like the anti-Foster to me. He has never been a "hit the hole, north south" guy, never.

TVA and drunks at various Knoxville establishments that clearly never watch football are the only ones I ever heard say they wanted Crompton over Ainge.

Exactly. Travis Henry was a Fulmer back. Foster is not. Some of that may be as a result in zone blocking though, which makes you cut more often.

Of the trio of Foster Coker and Hardesty, Foster has shown the most ability, he's not a speed merchant but he is elusive, he almost always makes the 1st guy miss and usually the second, he never gets tackled behind the line of srimmage, he's a good receiver out of the backfield and has been the best blocker of the bunch.
Coker has great speed and can take it the distance when he gets a lane and that's great but he hasn't shown any abilty as of yet to make defenders miss him, he got tackled behind the line of scrimmage time after time against UGA, Bama and Arky, and he can't pass protect worth a damn. If he keeps his nose clean his gamebreaking speed warrants having him on the field alot because eventually he's gonna break one, but to date he's not proven himself to be an every down type of back.
Hardesty, other than the TD run against Cal has shown pretty much nothing, but that may be partly because he was not 100% healthy yet after his knee surgery, this year should tell us more about him but I haven' t see anything about him that makes me think he's the go to guy.
All that being said, any success in the runnig game will depend on the OL, no blocking = no run game.

I haven't seen anyone on this board say Foster is a top-notch SEC back, myself included, if you read my post you will notice that it says of the trio of Foster, Coker, and Hardesty of which you were referring to.

If you have reason to believe he's not shown more than the other 2 let's here your argument. I'd be very interested to hear how one could make any sort of case for the other 2.

Final season stats:

121 attempts, 664 yards, 5.5 ypc, 4 tds
13 receptions, 129 yards, 1 td

His only bad game statistically was against NC State.

I think he he's going to be a good one down there.

I would take Lennon Creer any day as well. He will be a star.

Can't believe we are seeing this happen. Foster only needs about another 1200 yards to become UT's all time leading rusher despite his fumbling problems and at a time when UT's O-line is not as good as in the past.

That was made during the summer, but despite that its not like Foster has proved great or anything vs good competition this year, although I was impressed with his play vs MSU & UGA.

Not really. Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs put up seasons comparable to what Foster is doing this year.

Memphis/West Tennessee and Middle Tennessee should be fertile recruiting grounds for Tennessee... Bama, Auburn, and Ole Miss seem to find players there.
