'22 Ulysses Bentley IV (SMU RB transfer)

[SMU Vol]

Entered the portal today; supposedly wants to go to an SEC school. He reminds me of Kamara; slightly undersized but a dangerous weapon in both the running and receiving game. He’s originally from Houston and I believe has 3 years of eligibility remaining.

This guy sounds very intriguing, but was he injured some during 2021? He had 74 fewer carries during 2021 over 2020, and 303 fewer rushing yards. Also, his yards per catch went from 8.3 in 2020 down to 4.7 in 2021. However, his yards per carry went up from 5.4 in 2020 to 6.4 in 2021. Just curious why the slight drop in production during 2021.

If it were up to Bentley, the ankle injury wouldn’t be enough to slow him down. He didn’t dress for the game against South Florida after injuring his ankle in the win over TCU, but he has suited up for every game since. The ankle sprain was supposed to keep him out four to six weeks, but each week he pushed to get back on the field.

It made him good enough to play, if needed, but not healthy enough to be the same Bentley who ran for 403 yards through the first four games of the season and was rated as the No. 1 running back in the country, according to Pro Football Focus’ grades at the time.

Yes, he got hurt in the middle of the season and brought back too fast. Should’ve let him heal. he also re-injured himself on a massive run vs Houston that got called back on a penalty. Not great!

I doubt he was close with Dykes (who does next to nothing as a coach); and the RB coach that all the players loved that left SMU for TCU has since left for the NFL with the Rams

SMU wasn’t doing anything in the 80s that Texas, A&M and OU weren’t doing. We just didn’t have the luxury of a local media that looked the other way. We were also pretty stupid about the cheating.
