Saw some very disturbing footage today. Why are there pro-Russia Ukranians? What do they think they stand to gain?

For all the worry about anti-Semitism, there doesn't appear to be any attacks on Ukrainian Jewish communities . . . yet.

The Ukrainians are very anti-Semitic. They Volunteered to help the Nazis during the Holocaust and committed pogroms in Latvia and the Ukraine. The worst of them was John Demyanjuk or Ivan the Terrible,a guard in Auschwitz, who was arrested in Cleveland years ago.

The CIA strikes out again:

U.S. intelligence officials also denied that they had made a mistake Thursday when they advised Congress in classified briefings that they did not expect Russian President Vladimir Putin to send troops into Crimea, although they acknowledged it was possible.

The next day, Russian troops took up positions around key facilities in Crimea, and by nightfall the CIA assessed that Russia was in control of the region, officials said.

"This was not predicted," said a U.S. official, who asked not to be identified in discussing the classified briefings.

The intelligence officials defended their analysis, however, saying Putin may have made a spur of the moment decision to take military action.

Yes, nothing screams "conservative dreamland" like an ex-KGB agent running the show. Soviet Russia sure was a bastion of conservative values, eh?

Study more about contemporary Russia. And I'll say it again, just because he is a remnant of the Soviet establishment doesn't mean Putin reflects its communist values.

I'm well aware of Russia's current political situation and you're absolutely delusional if you think that Putin does not still hold many of the values that he did while in the KGB. Also, not sure how state run news, rounding up political dissenters and imprisoning them, and gun restrictions are a "conservative's dream."

Yeah, it's historically a problem. Western Russia (which included Ukraine and Poland at the time) were home to numerous Jewish pogroms. Jews were excluded from Slavic society and cossacks occasionally came in to smack some of them around.

Obviously those sentiments remain today, and there is worry that the neo-fascists, ultranationalist elements of the pro-Ukrainian group will resort to human rights violations. Honestly, though, Russia just says this. They couldn't give a crap about Jews either.

How would you describe neo-fascism politically?

And why do many leading conservatives, like Palin, have posters of him "fighting bears" on their wall at home?

Obviously, I was exaggerating (which is also why I said faux conservatism in a previous post), but even welcomed VolNation posters like Rasputin have stated that they would vote for Putin in a US election. Still waiting for VolMav to chime in about the matter.

Would you rather have the current limp noodle, spineless amateur that currently occupies the White House or someone that actually puts their nation first, is intelligent and decisive?

You may not agree with many of the things that Putin does, but you cannot deny the fact he is an effective leader and is providing something we just don't have in this country.

From the model of politics you work with, yes, he's an effective (perhaps even desirable) leader.

Regarding you last point, I think it's far too early to evaluate Putin's tenure. If this situation somehow doesn't end in his favor and if the Russian economy falls flat within the next decade or so (as it may very well do), he'll look far less effective than he does at the moment.
