Ukraine Protests

Russia is? Or the Russian Ukrainians?

Could be both actually. The Ukrainians of Russian decent as well as Russia behind the scenes. Remember, Putin is/was KGB and probably knows how to reach out under the table to get them to say what he wants without officially implicating the Russian government.

A confusing situation, I think:

Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that the armored personnel carriers spotted around Crimea were Russian, but said that they were only working to supply the base as permitted under a deal with Ukraine. The ministry added that Russia sees recent events in Crimea “as the consequence of recent internal political processes in Ukraine” and would not intervene.

It was not immediately clear who the men occupying the airports, dressed similarly to men who occupied Crimea’s parliament Thursday, were. Russian state media claimed the men were members of Crimean “self-defense” units formed in the autonomous province in response to the violent overthrowal of Yanukovych last week.

Will the UN come to the rescue?

The UN Security Council is meeting this afternoon. No doubt Russia will help draft a strongly worded letter condemning the Crimeans.

I was referring to the idea that the UN could come to the rescue of anyone.

Interesting.

Well, I was referring to Russia proper but, as Grand Vol pointed out, yes, I suppose it's both.

Although, one could make the argument that the initial pro-Ukrainian protesters were derailing the democratic process. I guess just a question of what is considered legitimate action against a democratically-elected (yet clearly corrupt) leader.

Who are these "militia" supposed to be guarding the Crimean facilities against?

It's a really odd situation. And those are some of the best armed/geared impromptu local "self-defense" militia I've ever seen. So much so in fact, that one might even go as far as to wonder if they're just Russian military. Just something that one might wonder.

That would be scary to see.

Appeared to be Hip transports and Hind gunships. Couldn't get a clear enough look to be certain, but the ones in the foreground looked like Hinds.

I'm hearing conflicting reports about the "armed invasion," but it is indeed verified that gunmen have taken a Crimean TV station.
