Ukraine Protests

Interesting take on the Russian side of the debate:

http://rt.com/news/russia-usa-rice-advice-450/

Russia sees merit in the advice against use of force in Ukraine which US National Security Adviser Susan Rice voiced, but believes it was wrongly directed towards Moscow. Washington would be a more appropriate recipient of the piece of wisdom.

“We have noted the expert assessment of Susan Rice based on multiple cases when American troops were sent to various places of the word, especially those where the US administration believed the norms of Western democracy were in danger, or where the local regimes were getting out of hand,” a Russian Foreign Ministry source told news agencies on Monday.

Dmitry Medvedev said the protesters has undertaken "armed mutiny" against the state and the Russian foreign ministry said ethnic Russians face suppression by the new regime. Moscow has also recalled its ambassador to the Ukraine as well. Sounds like Putin is turning up the talking points. The BBC is also reporting that Yanukovych is in the Crimea now as well.

Poor Russians! Been running the show in that part of the world (except for that brief German intrusion) for centuries and now they complain about suppression! Have to love blind ethnocentrism at work.

My wife and I watched the closing ceremonies last night on NBC. She about flipped her **** when those 20-30 ft tall mascots came out. While I didn't react quite the same, I still admit that they were pretty darn freaky.

I wish utvolfan would post more about his work. He sounds so much more interesting than the rest of you layabouts and nerdowells.

A mansion fit for a tyrant leader: Inside Yanukovych's home of sports cars and ostriches | KNLive

Check out Yanukovychs estate, it's estimated at over 100 million. Highlights include a giant pirate ship, private golf course, private zoo, tennis courts, bowling alleys, movie theaters, boat collections, and car collections. All this while the Ukraine economy was in the gutter.

I can understand all of the other amenities, but a pirate ship? That's so kindergarten.

Don't act like you're not impressed. You know you'd be rockin the eye patch and Johnny Depp wig if you had one.

Only if it came with a harem of buxom Eastern European women as well. And from what I'm hearing, it may very well have.

Financial documents and files of opposition journalists/activists were also found at the residence.

I saw they found documents that had been dumped in a river and were trying to dry them out.

With Yanukovych possibly holed up on a Russian base, they might never get to try him though.

Tensions have been rising on the peninsula in recent days, with pro-Moscow politicians and activists organising rallies and urging Russia to help defend the territory from advancing "fascists" from the rest of Ukraine.

The rhetoric on both sides doesn't look good for the long-term future of a united Ukraine.
