an email received by the editorial office claiming that Putin had a stroke. The Interpreter has a translation:

A letter arrived in the electronic email box of Russkiy Monitor signed by an anonymous official of the Central Clinical Hospital of the Department of Presidential Affairs in Moscow, in which he reported that among the patients of this elite Moscow hospital, where the top leadership of the Russian Federation are registered, there were rumors that Vladimir Putin was diagnosed several days ago with an ischemic stroke. Even so, the source said that the president was not hospitalized directly at the Central Clinical Hospital.

The editorial board of Russian Monitor cannot confirm or deny the information which might very well be false, however we must note the fact that the president has not been seen in public since last week, his meeting with the presidents of Belarus and Kazakhstan was unexpectedly cancelled. Observers note that since Putin has been in power, nothing of this sort has occurred.

there better?

going back to crazy land, what if Vlad is "playing dead" to see if any of his enemies pounce at the opening, so that he can come back and clean house and consolidate his power even more?

Vladimir Putin health fears: Kremlin denies rumours President is ill after he cancels second meeting in two days - People - News - The Independent

The odd thing is how this Nemtsov investigation has played out during this whole time. In what is typically a very well scripted media event, this one has gone off the rails in the past few days with stories tripping over each other. We had Kadyrov blaming western intel sources. Then it was Charlie Hebdo. When evidence showed these guys tracking Nemtsov well before Hebdo it started falling apart. Now we have Zaur saying he was beaten into confessing (although showing no visible signs). State run media stumbling all over itself was a red flag.

Putin very well could be faking to get an ally check. But I think something bigger is going on here. A whole board as well as Sechin rumored to be sacked? Something's afoot.

Considering a brunt of the fighting that took place in Europe was in this region the Russians live up memories of this constantly. Parades, ceremonies. monuments, etc. Between the western border and Moscow you cannot go to a town without seeing a monument to the dead and those who fought against the fascists to liberate Russia. And everyone else in Europe.

I get tired of the jackwagons, Russian or not, who fly around the Internet making posts about how, if it wasn't for Russia, Americans would be speaking German right now.

Yeah, right. What was Germany going to do? Send an invading army of 4 to 5 million men 4,000 miles across the Atlantic on a bunch of U-boats?

Give me a break.

I've been to a few museums in Russia and have had to point out to a few Russians some of the weapons on display were American supplied. Until they were able to ramp up their relocated industries we did supply them to help keep them afloat. They do not like being reminded of that.

The absence of American commemorations is interesting. Obviously a completely different war here, but still a lot of Americans fought.

If it wasn't for Russia, Europeans would be speaking German. Fascinating couterfactual what America would have done in that situation.

Alternative history book club...

Fatherland and 1945 for starters.

If it wasn't for Russia, Germans may have been speaking French. Hitler could have been a "Frenchman."

if it wasn't for the "New" Americans France might have been speaking English, the Spanish almost certainly would have.

If it wasn't for a random cohort of barbarians, the English might be speaking Latin.

Let's follow this back all the way to Adam and Eve.

I guess WWII isn't over.

German anger over Greek demand for war reparations | World news | The Guardian

Germany has reacted with anger and defiance to Greek government demands for multibillion-euro reparation payments over first and second world war atrocities which have further deepened the rift between the two countries.

Greece’s justice minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos said Athens was prepared to approve a court ruling to seize German property in the country – including the Goethe Institute, the German Archaeological Institute, German schools and holiday homes if Berlin refused to pay €341bn (£240bn) in compensation.

I don't think he is dead. I would be shocked if it was something as serious as a stroke, although there is come credence to it being something bad. the more i think on it the more i think he is just lying in wait; and that could easily be foreign or domestic.

For the record, I am in the US and have been for weeks. No coup, regime change, or anything like that from my cohorts. Don't think TechCamp is active there as well.
