Merkel not going to the 70th anniversary to the end of WWII celebration in Moscow after all. Based on the rumors on here I've been expecting her to turn east and run into Putin's embracing arms. I guess we will have to wait a little longer.

what was this guy trying to say? he keeps saying "respect" but never expands on what that means in regards to the US and Russia.

One point is that after 1991 we treated it more as a defeated nation--one that would want to adopt the ways of the winning side instead of being itself.

I'll stand next you brother.

I looked through the list. Very interesting.

Russia has 70+ corvettes. We have none.

those corvettes are probably pretty similar to the PT boats we used in WWII and Vietnam. and being Russian hasn't been updated since the Wall fell. not worried about them.

yeah and having Germany have no sovereign rights for 40+ years really set them back.......

Swarming larger ships with small boats is extremely effective both historically and now, but it isn't going to be effective against US naval vessels who are able to detect and hit craft well out of visual range.

Now...I'm not as sure. Historically though I would agree.

depends on the armament of the corvettes. if its a couple .50s a single cruiser could easily wipe them out, maybe even a destroyer. some 2" guns then yeah i would be worried in ship to ship warfare about being swarmed. however the carrier reigns supreme, i don't think there has been a major naval engagement where the two navies even saw each other in the last 70 yrs. even in WWI the ships were rarely in visual range of each other.

*just did some digging and they do carry anti ship missiles, so that puts them as a threat to our navy. however i found it humorous that our carriers can out run their corvettes.

Uh, huh. Iran swarmed a cardboard American aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf just a week or two ago with 400 patrol boats and blew the hell out of that thing after about 20 minutes.

An event that really spells the death of the age of American naval superiority, imo.

i know in most naval forces you have only 2/3 of your ships active at a time (at least thats what we do so i will use it as a standard) reading up on the russian navy it sounds like only 1 out of 10 are ready to go. and the most up to date are the corvettes. nothing else, except maybe some subs, have been launched in the last decade or so.

It's an interesting war game to be had. Can numbers outweigh the technological advantage of our fleet today? Corvettes are kind of a interesting class since they are purpose designed and a little better armed and armored than the standard missile or torpedo boat. But still lack the sophistication and multi-purpose roles of frigates and larger classes.

I think it depends greatly on the class of ship they are taking on.

During much of the Cold War, their subs had some advantages. Probably not as much now. Also, their personnel are pretty bad compared to ours in terms of enlisted submariners. Ours are professional, most of theirs only serve for 2 years.
