That's just it... there is no Soviet threat. You are still fighting the Cold War and you are 25 years behind.

Putin is not trying to build a communist empire. What Putin is trying to do is create a EurAsian trade zone that would rival the EU and the US. Russia has turned the page from communism, but it seems like most of you guys are still hellbent on trying to make Russia out to be some communist menace.

What do the Soviets, the 2 World Wars and the 40 years of Cold War that ended in 1990 have to do with the situation today? Why are we still getting involved in the nuisances and affairs of Europe when the entire decision by Ukraine and Yanukovich on weather to join the EU or join the EurAsian trade zone is none of our concern?

You're trying to divert attention away from the fact the Russians took territory illegally and in violation of standing agreements.

And your ignorance of history is part of the problem.

Unless the US or NATO do anything else stupid like start up a skirmish in the Caucuses or destabilize the Baltics, I think Putin would be more focused on building coalitions with the former Soviet states, not trying to absorb them into an empire. Putin is well aware of the costs and expense of running and maintaining an empire based on the collapse of the USSR, plus he is a student of history.

How can we destabilize the Baltic's when they want NATO and American presence there and the same in Georgia?

Again, that territory has been more Russian than Ukrainian for over 200 years. They have a majority ethnic Russian population there and Russia's only warm water naval port. They were not going to allow a destabilized Ukrainian situation to jeopardize that area.

If you are so concerned about international law, focus on the seditious acts the US State Department engaged in Ukraine that created the catalyst for the Crimea annexation in the first place.

If you are really worried about territory being taken illegally, look into Israel and the Gaza and West Bank.

If NATO decides to move in heavy military equipment and missiles into these 2 regions, that would be a destabilizing event, because Russia will respond in kind in an aggressive manner to this build up on their border and now you have a recreation of another Cold War showdown.

Destabilize may not be the right term, more along the lines of using these countries to agitate Russia.
