German exports slumped by 5.8pc in August as the crisis in Ukraine and Russia took its toll. “We’re no longer in a recovery,” said Volker Treier, head of the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK). He said geopolitical upsets may have pushed the economy over the edge into a “technical recession”, but added that Germany itself is also to blame for failure to break out of a slow-growth trap. “We have too little investment. That’s been the case for years,” he said.

Bulgaria Rejects Russia's Charge of Disloyalty For Wanting Western Jets

Bulgaria on Wednesday rejected Russian accusations that it was betraying its former Soviet-era ally by considering replacing its aging Russian warplanes with ones built in the West.

In a Twitter post commenting on reports that Bulgaria was contemplating buying secondhand jets such as Eurofighters from Italy or F-16s from Portugal to replace its current fleet, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin wrote:

"News from Bulgaria: a certain Shalamanov [Defense Minister Velizar Shalamanov] has convinced Prime Minister [Georgi] Bliznashki to once again betray Russia … in favor of second-hand eagles."

In response, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Danail Mitov issued a statement calling Rogozin's comments "extremely unworthy … contrary to good manners and [they] show, unfortunately, a lack of respect for Bulgarian institutions and the state."

He continued: "As for the implicit accusations of disloyalty, I would like to remind [the comments'] authors that the Republic of Bulgaria is a member of the EU and NATO and it does not owe explanations about its sovereign decisions to third parties."

I know it's not Russia, but it is part of the so-called "Russian World." And, quite frankly, there's no doubt similar things happen inside Russia all the time these days. But this all goes back to what I've said before: Russians have a completely different idea of "freedom" from us. Their idea of freedom is having a Russian driving a lash across their backs. The only thing that matters is that it's a Russian doing it and not some god-forsaken foreigner. That's freedom and self-determination, in their opinion.

Russians learned how to manipulate the lash upon one another proper from the Mongols.

Among the evidence presented against Sadovnyk was a photograph. Prosecutors say it shows him near Kiev’s Independence Square on Feb. 20, wearing a mask and holding a rifle with two hands, his fingers clearly visible.

The problem: Sadovnyk doesn’t have two hands. His right hand, his wife told Reuters, was blown off by a grenade in a training accident six years ago. As prosecutors introduced the image at a hearing in April, said Yuliya Sadovnyk, her husband removed a glove and displayed his stump to the courtroom.

“He can’t really shoot,” said Serhiy Vilkov, Sadovnyk’s lawyer. “To blame him for the crime is a political game.”
