After winning the east in 07, I came into the 2008 season with 2 things to look forward to. Both seemed likely: UT would rebuild off of 07 and be very competitive in the East; and UGA would get what they asked for and confirm that they are overrated.
I know plenty of people will question me making fun of a 8-2 team while UT is in utter and complete turmoil. But I don't care. The UGA #1 preseason ranking was both humorous and hard to deal with. It was funny because we knew they weren't even the best team in their division and they had been setup to fail. But regardless, cocky UGA fans littering our boards was very frustrating for months.
They discounted our 2007 East title as pure luck. The smack sounded something like this: We got our butt's whooped by 2 of our 3 biggest rivals by a billion points and backed our way into the SECCG. However, what they didn't credit was the fact that we surpassed expectations by winning the games we had to win.
Ironically, the UGA 2008 season is very similar to our 2007 season. They beat us (but didn't cover the spread) and got their asses handed to them by Bama and Florida. Sounds familiar doesn't it. Only difference is we surpassed expectations in 07 and they choked worse than an English Bulldog eating a dozen chicken bones. We tried to tell them that they were overrated and that beating Hawaii was not that big of an accomplishment. But they wouldn't listen. So in the midst of a season of hell, we can still find pleasure in UGA's disappointing fall from hyped-up grace by saying "I told you so."
So here's to UGA's preseason #1 and the frustration that lies ahead of them. Mark Richt's job security was to come from beating a Spurrierless UF team and an outdated UT coaching staff. Fast forward 5 years later; Urban Meyer says hello and we will introduce our new coach as soon as he is announced. We did that for the last 5 years, so have fun with that.
