Did the Sec mandate the 20% capacity rule or is it up to each school to set their own maximums? At casual glance, UGAs stadium appeared to be almost 50% or more. Maybe they used cut-outs but there were lots of folks there???

There is no NCAA rule on fan attendance. Most of the NCAA covid rules are about testing requirements and who can be on the field (like no band, no mascots) and who should wear a mask on the sidelines. Nothing about fan seating capacities, the NCAA and SEC both stood back from that knowing the state and local governments would just trump them anyway.

In September, Georgia Athletic Director, Greg McGarity, said that Georgia would follow the SEC recommendation and allow a capacity between 20-25% or what is between 18,000 - 23,000 for Sanford Stadium. There were no set rules handed down by Sankey, just that recommendation. Georgia clearly had more than 23,000 fans last night.

I thought there were more in attendance at Georgia (from the telly) than in Neyland. But, I think I heard the Bulldog attendance was 20,000. It seemed like Georgia's cheerleaders were plumper than ours, too.

I would guess that the crowd in Sanford Stadium last night was the largest gathering of people for a public event in the United States since the mandated economic shutdown began on March 23rd. I think it was around 50,000. I'm not necessarily saying they did anything wrong, but that is not what their AD McGarity said they were going to do 3 weeks ago.

23,000 were fans, 18,000 were supporters, 12,000 students, 5,332 were followers.

That was quarantine weight plus the freshman 15.

I actually called my brother and asked if he was watching, just for this reason. There were at least 35,000 in there.

They announced 1/5 of the stadium was full but that stadium definitely looked more like 40 to 60% full

From SEC guidelines announced in August:

Attendance

  • Institutions shall determine the number of guests permitted to attend in accordance with applicable state and local guidelines, policies and/or regulations. In the absence of state and/or local guidelines, policies and/or regulations, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on physical distancing should be applied.
