UFC Thread

Fights on tomorrow, well later tonight @10 FS1. Decent card Jacare vs Gegard, Reem VS Rothwell, Meathead vs Lewis, Lauzon vs Chiesa.

Excited to see Chris Beal on the prelims as well.

I don't agree with his thesis, it's probably not racist, but a partial explanation may be that it's racial. I really can't explain why he's not a bigger star, and exactly like Rogan says, people just lamely say. "he's cocky" when all fighters are cocky and he's not actually that cocky.

You have a point with Silva and Rampage, but I don't think they are 1:1 comparisons...I don't think that Silva is any more popular among Americans than Jones is and he was as bragadocious as they come, unlike Jones who apparently fakes humility. Rampage is a Charles Barkley, type...just a huge personality that everyone loves. He also didn't dominate the sport (harder to villainize) when he was popular in the UFC.

Does anybody know where you can look at purses? I remember at one time Couture and Liddel were getting way more than anybody with $750K per fight....I'm wondering what the top guys command today.

Then why does cocky azz Mayweather do great PPV numbers? He can sell a fight. Jones is a terrible interview, and a terrible fight promoter. Which if you want huge PPV numbers you almost have to do. Chael, B.J., Tito, Page all cocky guys that could sell a fight against me. I don't care that he's cocky, all my favorite athletes are cocky loud mouths. I don't think he is who he is. Maybe he just hasn't grown into his voice yet, maybe he's too worried about his image. Idk

I thought we were discussing PPV sales, no? Anderson is about as cocky as they come and always sales out. Page is likable...to us. I would imagine racists hate a black guy with his attitude, he still sold out PPVs. He crushed 2 of (what I would imagine to be) "white Americas" favorite fighters in his 2nd and 3rd fights. I would imagine "racists" would hate this loud cocky black man, beating their precious Chuck and Hendo.

Btw, I don't mean this to come across jack***ish if it does.

No clue. I do know Anderson made 600k in his last loss, and it was the most on the card. Dana took extra special care of his boy Chuck.

One guy that would back the racial aspect would be GSP. Dude was boring as dirt in and out of the ring and sold every time. To be fair though we don't know how much of that was Canada boosting his sales.

You're fine, speak your mind.

The boxing crowd is not the MMA crowd, IMO. The guys I know from Cedar City Utah don't watch boxing, and worship MMA, and know like 2 black guys. It's a different fan base.

You used the word racist, but I specifically said it's not racist, but maybe racial. We tend to root for people like us (for example, most Americans are inclined to root for Americans), and it wouldn't surprise me if the blue collar, sheltered, middle American MMA fans don't care about him because he's not like them. It's kind of human nature to like people like you...it's not always about race, but sometimes it is.

It's not the same crowd, but racial undertones are prevalent in every sport. I know older guys that would sacrifice a child for there to be a white HW champion in boxing again.

I know you used racial, I wasn't trying to change your wording or the discussion. I was just using "racists" as a way to describe a certain group of people, that may have used that as a reason to hate Page, hence make it a racial issue. I'm sure people don't like Jones for those reasons you stated. But we are talking about PPVs not popularity right? Maybe it's because nobody thinks he'll lose, maybe people just don't care cause he lacks personality, maybe it's somewhat racial. The problem with the racial aspect, it seems like the black community isn't really that behind him either. There is a huge disconnect with people for some reason, and for whatever the reason is they just don't care. True fight fans will watch no matter what, the key to big PPV sales is the casual fan...and that disconnect is what hurts his PPVs. IMO

Think of it this way. You are a casual fan that watches occasionally. You hear Jones on the radio or on TV, no real clue who he is, he is promoting a fight. He's talking calmly, monotoned, no real enthusiasm in his voice. You turn the station, and you hear Tito, again no real clue who he is, and he is promoting a fight. He's all jacked up, talking trash, really pumped about the fight. Who do you want to see fight? I really think that factors in to the casual fans PPV purchases.

I think the UFC as a whole needs to figure out how to push the names of the future Jones, Pettis, Weidman, Cain, Hendricks etc. It feels like with the past Chuck, Brock, GSP, BJ, Page, Shogun, Silva etc done or close to it, overall it seems to be slipping. I think some of that is just too many cards too though.

I would say Weidman and Hendricks are very well liked (What's not to like), and if they spend a period of time dominating their divisions, they could be huge names in the business.

I'm not talking making them liked, I'm talking about building their names. But I don't like Weidman, he bores the crap out of me. Hendricks is very entertaining though, so is Showtime.

I have no idea what makes me like fighters...my favorites are all different personalities, styles, talent-levels...it's weird. Fedor, Bones, Liddel, Nate Diaz, Chiesa, McGee, Rampage, M Hughes (though he's faded over time for me), etc.

There is no rhyme or reason to that list.
