I'm taking my dad again this year too, though this'll be only his third time ever in Neyland and only twice for a game.
He got to go on a "recruiting" trip back in high school (1980) and shook Johnny Majors hand. My dad wasn't really being recruited by UT (Dad played high school ball at Jellico TN) it was a mentor who had connections with the school. My dad didn't think he could go to college, didn't think he had the grades or the money (he was extremely poor) but the mentor was trying to encourage him to try to go anyway and set up the visit just to get him out of Jellico (if anyone's been there they'll know what I'm talking about). He went as a "kicker" cause though my dad played "fullback" for Jellico High he didn't look like he'd be a recruit except maybe as a kicker. My dad said he got to meet some of the players, (though he couldn't remember their names).
Last year was the first game he ever watch in Neyland and he loved it! We went to the South Alabama game. He's never been a huge college or pro football fan but Neyland Stadium and UT was a major reason he decided to try and go to college, just the experience of something more out there beyond little ol' Jellico was enough to get my Dad thinking he could actually make something of himself. His life was changed drastically because of that decision
My dad wears orange with pride even though he doesn't necessarily follow them closely- but if he cheers for anyone its the Big Orange.
