I agree that we should win this game handedly. UAB is down, but we shouldn't do what hat said and go ahead and put this one in the win column. We're not good enough to overlook anybody.

Quoting Dooley in reference to UTM (who has a weaker team than UAB): "We expect them to play their best; and their best is good enough to beat us if we don't come ready to play."

Sorry for the cliche, but that is why it is settled on the field and not on paper. Vols 2-0 vs UTM and UAB.

This is good to hear, I didn't really know much about UAB and I was worried about a let down after Oregon and Florida, and before the tough stretch of Oct.

Here's a brief season outlook that I saw recently. Basically, Joe Webb made their offense go last season, so replacing him will be difficult. The defense was very ineffective against the pass last season:

The UAB Blazers finished 5-7 last season, missing bowl eligibility by one game. Neil Callaway enters his fourth season as head coach with 16 returning starters.

The entire UAB offense was built around the electric Joe Webb in 2009. The now Minnesota Viking's dual threat ability kept defenses off balance and resulted in 426 yards of total offense/game. He accounted for 3600 yards of offense and 32 touchdowns. Running backs play a lesser role in this offense and a committee of backs were utilized a year ago. Justin Brooks and Daniel Borne are the top two returning rushers and combined for only 419 yards and two scores. They add junior college transfer Pat Shed to the backfield. He is extremely quick and could earn the starting job. The receiving core is one of the most experienced in the conference and is led by Frantrell Forrest. His 34 catches led the team along with nine touchdown receptions. The offensive line was extremely young last year, but return four starters in 09’ despite losing 1st team all-conference C Jake Seitz. RG Chris Hubbard made the Conference USA all-freshman team.

The largest amount of improvement must come from the defense if the Blazers are going to have a winning season. They allowed over 32 points/game and 455 yards of total offense last year. Defending the pass was a major issue as opponents threw for more than 300 yards per game. Nine starters are back for defensive coordinator Eric Schumann. DT Elliott Henigan is effective at the nose tackle position even though he is undersized. His 5.5 tackles for loss led the team. DE Bryant Turner recorded a team high six sacks and will be a vital part of the defense. Four true freshman started at least one game at linebacker in 2009. Lamanski Ware is the top returning tackler at LB with 71 tackles. The secondary was absolutely blitzed by opposing offenses through the air. They gave up over 400 yards passing twice last season. Three full time starters return including 2nd team all-conference selection FS Hiram Atwater.

UAB shouldn't have lost the game. Most statistics besides the final score show that UAB actually outplayed FAU. We led until the final 2 minutes of the game... at one point leading by as many as 16pts.

1) UAB threw a pass that got tipped in the air and was intercepted and run back for a TD.

2) FAU had a 77-yard bomb that their WR caught with one hand and ran it in for a TD.

3) UAB drove down to the FAU 10 yard line with 5 seconds remaining only to have a game-winning FG blocked

Those 3 plays alone account for a 17pt swing in FAU's favor. Of course, games frequently come down to just a handful of plays. But if any one of those doesn't go in FAU's favor, then they lose the game.

UAB is very likely to lose to Tennessee, but I don't know that I'd be so confident to pencil in a win based on the result of one game. Our new QB ran for a UAB and Conference USA record 214 yards in this game. Our offense is solid... defense is decent. I don't think UAB will beat you guys, but I don't think it'll be a cakewalk for you guys either.

The problem with the UAB vs FAU game was Schnellenberger...I grew up just south of Louisville and watched a lot of U of L ball and I think, in his prime day, if he would have the $$$ and the talent...he would have won multiple NCs...Schnellenberger is a great coach, and great coaches find a way to win.

BTW, Fulmer was a great coach as well.

Memphis' 6 TD loss to Miss St makes me feel a little better about that game as well.

It's a guaranteed win so if she has any questions about the traditions, crowd, etc., I won't be so caught up in the game emotionally that I tune her out. I can even go and get her concessions and (if she wants to) leave a few minutes early and look like a hero all the while knowing that I haven't missed a thing.

My wife's (then GF) first live exposure to Neyland was opening day vs. Syracuse. First Offensive play of the game was a 70ish yard TD strike from Clausen to Stallworth. She had tears in her eyes. It was awesome. I no longer had to explain a damn thing as far as tradition...take her to Oregon. UAB atmosphere will leave a lot to be desired.

Howard made Miami a powerhouse; got Lou-a-vill going again, and built FAU from scratch.
Schnellenberger is one of the greats in cfb. Bryant disciple.
Phil was at the right place at the right time.
