U.S. Navy sailors and boats seized by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea
  • Convention on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone, entry into force: 10 September 1964
Territorial waters
Out to 12 nautical miles (22 kilometres; 14 miles) from the baseline, the coastal state is free to set laws, regulate use, and use any resource. Vessels were given the right of innocent passage through any territorial waters, with strategic straits allowing the passage of military craft as transit passage, in that naval vessels are allowed to maintain postures that would be illegal in territorial waters. "Innocent passage" is defined by the convention as passing through waters in an expeditious and continuous manner, which is not "prejudicial to the peace, good order or the security" of the coastal state. Fishing, polluting, weapons practice, and spying are not "innocent", and submarines and other underwater vehicles are required to navigate on the surface and to show their flag. Nations can also temporarily suspend innocent passage in specific areas of their territorial seas, if doing so is essential for the protection of its security.

There is no way in hell The U.S. Navy was that close to their waters. Even if it was Farsi Island.

In case you missed the link on China entering our waters.

Chinese Navy Ships Came Within 12 Nautical Miles of U.S. Coast - WSJ

And that's what 12 miles off our coast looks like.

And the analysis...

The ships did not violate international law, which allows countries to transit other nations’ seas under what is called “innocent passage,” the official said. He likened China’s movement through U.S. waters off Alaska to the activities of U.S. ships in the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Iran.

How close were they?

Farsi Island is right smack dab in the middle of the Persian Gulf and has a known Iranian Military base on it. So it's known that U.S. forces must avoid it. You don't avoid it by setting a course east of the island which would be closer to the Iranian coast but west of the Island closer to the Saudi Coast. Travel between Kuwait and Bahrain is indeed a straight shot. I correct myself from another post I posted early.

Each time a candidate outright says or squarely implies that the brief holding of the sailors by Iran is Obama's fault, or somehow "caused" by the nuclear deal, you drink a shot.

Who's in? Debate starts at 9 p.m. I imagine those who play the game will be blacked out by 9:10.

Had you proposed a similar game before any of Barrys speeches where he blames guns or Rs for every problem in the world, or any time he says lone wolf instead of radical Islam we would all likely be dead of alcohol poisoning

And Paul won't be there with the voice of reason. Perfectly looped gifs always get a +1

The pictures part of this situation is very trivial and not really important. Please show me what international law they have broken (asking for the third time) by taking pictures and politically spinning this as a win for their country.

Come on BC this was a propaganda and political win for them.

It's important to understand that Iran has its share of *******s, who have to make everything a pecker measuring contest, just like we do as well.

It's my hope that the moderates in both nations will ultimately prevail and that the agreement will eventually work.

If not, then the pecker measurers on each side can finally crawl in a restroom stall together and have their war, but I politely ask they leave the rest of us out of it.

It's not, it's more of a f-you to the worlds lone superpower.

True, but outside of the political spinning and social media (which I still don't see as a big deal), they acted the same way we would have if the situation were reversed. If an Iranian vessel were in our waters, we would have acted the same exact way as far as detaining and investigating.
