Tyson Helton TEAM talk

I think this is where we agree to disagree. Some of us want to forget about Butch and look to the future. And some of us are still having a sort of Butch-induced PTSD. The only cure for any of it is winning. And if we don't, I guarantee you this board will be full of people questioning Pruitt's every utterance and wondering how we ever fell for it. I hope we never have to find out.

agree. this coach and staff is different than the last coach and staff. the need for some to distance this staff from the last is kind of pointless. it's just as pointless as the need to want to compare and cling any semblance of similarity between the two.

the only thing anyone needs to know is if that staff had done a good job, they'd still be here. they're not, and it's not yet known how good or bad this staff will actually be.....

that said, i'd be hard pressed to believe that anyone objectively looking at what this staff has done up to this point, has to fall in the category of "so far, so good".

When you have kids, yes, I said kids, coming in from all around, that haven't played together, you have to have motivation. You guys are sad. You sit here and complain about coaches giving players motivational talks. Sheesh. Maybe everyone around you doesn't live life 110% all of the time like you. Maybe some people get motivated in different ways. And you want to say that's a problem. Open your eyes. Motivation comes from great managers, leaders, coaches and teammates. There is nothing wrong with it. If it helps build the team, be it in sports, business, or military, then it's a positive thing. If you think it's pathetic or sad or dumb. Then maybe you're just better than everyone else. I want them to motivate the team in any fashion that creates wins and better young men. Go Vols!!

For most of these kids it's the first time around the block. There's a lot of playing and living to do before this talk gets corny and moldy.

This is exactly the kind of silliness I'm talking about. I didn't remember the "infallible" quote you are so worked-up about, so I looked it up. What Butch actually said, in the beginning days of his tenure here, "The plan is infallible if the players buy into it." Sounds pretty crazy, alright. My God, what was he thinking?! We should have known right then and there that we had a lunatic on our hands!

Seriously, how is a quote like that different than what Pruitt has said? Which is that he expects to win championships, but he is going to need every player to buy into doing it his way. Dude, literally EVERY coach says that! Pruitt may not have the word infallible in his vocabulary, but he's basically saying the same thing. And that's great, IMO. Don't we want a coach who is confident that he can win games? Hell, Pruitt even said he needs the FANS to buy in!

Butch was right to be confident in his system when he was hired here. He had been successful everywhere else he had coached. Pruitt has the same right to be confident. We wouldn't have hired a coach who wasn't confident. No team would. That's why I say that all of these guys say essentially the same thing. To bash Butch for doing the same thing every coach does is silly.

Bash him for not winning. Or just be thankful he's gone. Stop with the silliness.

The players did buy into it and his system was garbage. Dobbs going off script was only time when we actually won the "big" games. That trumet blower's "system" barely worked in a terrible big East conference and when Dobbs left, the only thing his system produced was the worst record in Tennessee's history. Defend him if you want but the evidence is there and I ain't buying it.

Or maybe he just needed a better chart.

No, I'm on record saying he should have been replaced. And I truly hope that Pruitt is The One.

I just have to chuckle when I see our fans praising the new coaches for doing the same kinds of things the old coaches did that they still can't stop whining about. Most of the criticism about Butch's "gimmicks" are referring to things that just about all coaches do to try to motivate young people. I just think it's kind of silly.

It's every where. Tenn Tech baseball players gets a WWE championship belt after every homerun. course they passed that thing around like 135 plus times this year.

You can tell from the video the kind of attitude Pruitt is instilling all across the football program. Helton sounds like a HC as an OC. I dig it.

Team is meat spelled backwards. My old coach obviously rode the short bus.

Plus, no self-respecting squad leader would make a speech anything like that.

A squad leader's pre-fight speech normally goes more like this: "Alright, you f***ing a**holes, get yer s*** and come on, we gotta take that g****** hill from those c**********."

That's definitely officer talk he's doing. :)

[just kidding, some squad leaders are quite erudite]

You lost me at "self- respecting".

The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts.
Together Everyone Achieves More
There is no I in team

And now it is "little victories" and "little wins" rather than 1% better.

Oh yes there is!!!

Don't get your panties in a wad KB, Lotta pot meet kettle going around here. Lighten up and have some fun.

Or don't. :dunno:

If we don’t relive our suffering at EVERY FREAKING CONTRIVED OPPORTUNITY, did we really suffer? At least enough to impress others?

No, I understood your point fine. And if you think what band boy was saying and what CP are similar, I'm saying you're wrong. CP and staff are stressing the mentality it takes to win and what it takes to succeed from everyone. jones was always preaching his system and pseudo-football terms like "complementary football" and "eye focus(or whatever focus bs he spouted". Name me one other successful coach that would say something like that with a straight face and mean it.

And confidence from butch? that jackass sat up there in a PC and tried to convince everyone that playing at home puts more pressure on the home team than the visiting team and that because a freshman never traveled, don't expect too much. (paraphrased)

Look, I could go on and my contempt for butch is immeasurable. But he's gone and all I care about is seeing Tennessee win again.

Goodness this took on a life of its own! TEAM is a slogan. It is used, primarily in business, but other places as well. The speech had nothing to do with football. That probably wasn't the purpose of the speech. All coaches use this and will continue to do so.

Folks have been making a big deal about this coaching staff being all about football and not about catchy slogans and phrases ... well guess what - they use slogans too!

If the TEAM doesn't play like a TEAM this fall and plays like a bunch of individuals and loses a lot of games - you all will be over it not being about catchy slogans.

Zackly.

Funny thing, I've often wondered if 99, Larry, Bama, Tusk etc. go over to other websites and talk about how stupid Tennessee fans are.... "Oh, except for (insert name)"

One can measure “little victories/wins” whether it’s in the weight room, in the position group room, on the practice field....those can be quantified. “1% better everyday” cannot.....literally no way to measure that.

Lol.

in the weight room:lift 100 lbs one day, 101 the next. do 100 reps one day, 101 the next.

practice field: complete 100 passes, complete 101.

position group room: answer faster I guess, I don't really know what all they do here, so you might have a point here.

I would say little victories is far more vague than 1% better.
