Tyson Helton called a good game

Credit to all the Volnation members who have complained the last 5 weeks about the conservative game plans. Today's play calling was not perfect but I'm sure all the posts had some influence on UT scoring 30 points today. Congratulations to all players, coaches and fans ! Go Vols !

Tennessee had 14 first down plays in the 2nd half, 13 runs and 1 pass called on those . Total of 12 yards on the 13 running plays and 44 on the one passing play.
Aaaaaannnnnd, JG would signal its a run play every FN time.

Of course I am a big Vol fan but one thing still lacking is mixing the pass and run on first down plays...probably going to see it against Alabama i hope..no use letting the D know your 1st down plays are 99% runs.
It was a fantastic win and I think the players and coaches feel pretty good. Still some things to clean up, You can see the other teams D flowing pre-snap to the hole where our run is going...gotta use some different looks, movement, counter plays ect to slow the rush down a little and at least make them guess a little bit.

I see a more and more improvement last week and then again today...We have a great coaching staff...give Helton some time guys...its way tooooo early to judge him...lets just hope he can change it up a little more, especially on 1st downs

I will never subscribe to the mindset that one coach on the field is always right and 100,000 fans are all wrong. I’m around a lot of people that have played only high school football, some college (big time and small) and a couple that got to see time in the NFL. He has a hard time understanding what he’s seeing on the field in front of him and how he reacts to it. It took CJP jumping into his offense the past couple of weeks to shake that up and get him to change. Even still, for some inexplicable reason we ran the ball on every first down except one that I remember and most second downs vs one of the best front four in college football. Why, why would you keep doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result? He’s got to figure out the rhythm of a game and mix up the first down calls. He’s essentially only giving us two downs instead of four by doing so. Did much better once the light came on that we could pass against Auburn.

Look at the time of possession! The reason we are running whether successful or not is to help our defense and keep their offense off the field. Gameplan was great today. I'd like to see a couple of screens to Chandler added to the playbook!

It's been excruciating to watch Jennings not get targets throughout the season thus far but today was a huge step in the correct direction. He's just a special player with the ball in his hands and he deserves the burn he got today. Those two third down catches were huge and a great sign for the future (just as much as the touchdown grab). I think the gameplan was great. UT knew that Auburn would play a lot of man on the outsides and they made them pay. Kudos to G for not throwing deep balls out of bounds and giving his guys a chance for jump balls. Staying with the run even though it wasn't effective most of the time was also paramount for a win. You've gotta keep the ball away from Auburn and they did that just enough to win. It was also promising that UT was ABLE to run on the last drive. With that said, I'm also impressed that they didn't shut down the offense with the lead. UT kept the foot on the gas throughout. I'm surprised that Pruitt has them believing this early, but I'm with it. I'm interested to see how the rest of the season plays out now, though I don't really think next week will have any bearing on where this team is in its journey.

This is what I have been thinking all year, run clock , shorten game , give the d some rest.
Pretty sure Helton is not as dumb as some on here think, gotta believe he knows we r gonna struggle running it but can’t abandon it

No one wants to abandon the run. Just mix it up. We're running power with scat backs, and only passing on 3rd down. You can't expect to win when the defense knows your script. And we can't challenge defense's the way we have been and expect to win. Run, run, pass, punt. It's ridiculous. Lucky for us today, our WR bailed us out on 3rd downs

When you're in 2nd and 9 out longer or 3rd and 8 or longer, you call plays you have to, not plays you want to.

The only complaint I have is that our 1 St down play calling was just not good.

JG had 320 yards passing and I'd wager over 200 was on 3rd down.

Players made plays.

If we lost people are singing a different tune. I'm glad we won, but let's be honest. The playcalling hasn't changed. Run, run, pass. I dunno if we're trying to force this line to grow up, but we can't waste that many plays. We ran on first down 9 outta 10 times. Finally we went for a play action on first down late in the game and it paid off. As bad as our run game is, we have got to mix it up more. The passing game is usually good. We just don't throw it enough. Defense looking a lot better. They are playing faster and more aggressive
It changed slightly. Early in the game they did pass more on first down but that went away quickly. They actually threw a lot more on second down this game. We did take more downfield shots early. Finally, as others mentioned, the play action call late was beautiful. But we just aren’t a power running team. We have shown that on 3rd and 4th and short we can’t just line up and get it by running up the gut. So slight improvement on play calling. Solid improvement on pass blocking and blitz pick up. Zero improvement on run blocking. Take away the 2 rushes of 18 yards each on the first drive and we ran for 32 yards on 34 carries. If you aren’t +3 in turnovers that gets you beat. But we were +3. It’s just nice to get a win against a SEC opponent.

A lot of that time of possession wasn’t because of our play calls though. It was because Auburn plays fast. They were snapping the ball in half the time would. So I would say more bad decision on their part caused the difference than good decision on ours.

We threw it more on 1st early in the game and actually threw it on 2nd down way more which is why JG’s total passes went way up. But, the second half was almost all runs on 1st down with the exception of one beautiful play action call. Some improvement today but more to go. Bottom line is great win!

About midway through the 3rd quarter I had convinced myself he was calling plays on 1st and 2nd down to get to 3rd and 8+.

UT is not gonna average 5 a carry with this OL but it could be higher when the D is not zeroing in on specific downs either. I think they need to give Chandler more outside runs to the wide side. Our WRs block well all he needs is a crease.

Helton to slow to give up on the run when it is not working. Doesn't use plays that are working enough. Way to predictable on first down and his play calling would look terrible if not for some amazing plays by WR's on third down yesterday. JMO he puts the OL and QB in a bad situation by running up the middle on first and second down so much when it is not working. After three or four possessions and your not getting anything but 3rd and 8 or 9 or more time to try something else.

Yeah and it'd be ok if Jordan didn't get any of those touches.

At this point I agree. I dont think hes a bad back and he can improve but his ceiling is not that of Chandlers or Banks IMO. If he sorts out the fumbles.

Chandler doesnt fit the physical profile that Pruitt wants but he knows how to advance the football and find the endzone.

Don’t know what you were doing from 11-2 yesterday but I was watching UT WIN against a #21 ranked AUburn

The play calling on first down was horrible the whole first half. With a guaranteed one or two yards by running it between the tackles on first down every time, that gave the offense only two downs to pick up nine yards. Fortunately, Guarantano and our receivers were on fire on third and long even though Auburn's D knew we had to throw after Helton pissed away first down and put our offense in obvious passing situations.

A better offense coordinator would've absolutely lit Auburn up, especially with the way Guarantano and the receiving corps were playing. They played lights out and our offense still scored only 23 points, a point fewer than Auburn's offense with Stidham playing his worst possible game. If our D hadn't scored off the fumble, our offensive production would not have been enough to win the game, despite the phenomenal performances by our quarterback and receivers.
