I wanted to start this thread bc i see it popping up in many others. Helton made a gameplay decision that he thought would give us our best chance to win. That strategy was to get through (at least) the first half without being out of the game. Unfortunately, we didnt convert a lot of 3rd and shorts that we should have, but the first half went by quickly. I will point out that if we didnt have that b.c only-happens-to-UT moment of a UGA fumble td and then, at the end of the half, our defense getting unforced errors we would have been down by 3 or maybe 6. Anyway, this strategy and the execution of our defense left us down 17 - 0 at half. Then, I think is when you should start to judge Helton's play calling. If you did or didnt like the play calling in the 2nd half by our offense then okay. But I think this idea that an OC "wants" to run these vanilla bs plays is wrong. I believe the goal was to keep the game in range of a W, then the air raid late game to try and win. IMO, we lost bc our defense could not stop the run all night. It was not our OC or the play calling, it was not our offensive line, it was not our defensive line. Maybe our secondary could have played better but the number 1 problem was stopping the run

I've never been an OC for a college team, so I'll admit up front that Helton has forgotten more about football than I'll ever know. Now, with that being said, I didn't like his 3rd and short calls early in the game. When it's 3rd and 1 or 2, we have to keep possession and we didn't either time. Secondly, the attempted reverse call that nearly got Palmer (if I remember correctly) decapitated on the end around was a poorly designed play in my opinion.

I know it's early in Helton's career here, and we have to give him a fair chance. However, at this point in time I don't see a great deal of imagination or player development. Hopefully this gets better soon.

He called a good second half in my opinion. First half not so much. But he’s learning on the job too. We faced the #2 team in nation I was expecting 50 -10. So better than I thought and they fought which says all I needed to hear at this point

The first half play calling was terrible again, but it improved in the second half. I'm unsure if that is because Helton got lit into at halftime or if he finally started opening it up. I know the line is weak and I do not think we have great QB play, but we still have to mix it up to keep the opposing defense guessing. We are being too predictable and making it harder on our defense. Florida and Georgia played up on us and suffocated us. In the second half, once we went deep and started calling different plays we started seeing holes and gaining first downs. Regardless, even if Helton is trying to be conservative and play keep away, these slow starts and three and outs are killing our chances at winning games. There is not much we can do when we are 14+ points down already. Even though we got lucky a couple times too and made some mistakes, the defense looked improved and played better today. It would be really nice if we could go into Auburn and get a W.

Not in the first half. I think he’s finally realizing he’s going to have to throw the ball on more than 3rd and long. That realization will help us in future games.

Sorry OP, having trouble with the take. Sure we had problems with the run and tackling has been less than satisfactory. It was earlier this year and last year. But no it's not all on the D. The offense has to show up for the entire game too. Gaining 66 yards on 25 carries and going 2-10 on 3rd downs is on the OC. That anemic performance put the D on the field for 37 min (offense had it for 22 min). How about the Offense execute, i.e. Convert 3rd and short, and NOT leave a suspect D on the field against the #2 team with Chaney as the OC.

Praise the Lord someone else gets it. Those 2-10 third downs gives the D maybe 2 minutes max to rest before they’re back at work.

Nah Helton is the weak link in this staff. Maybe he will improve, but his lack of playcalling and SEC experience has been evident these last two game
I certainly agree with you. Passing on third and one and running consistently on 3rd and long, what gives. Our first pass if I remember to go 10 yards was after we were down 24 to 0. Everyone has seen that we can go down field so why wait until the game is out of reach to try it, because you take a chance either way, and at least this backs some of the defense off the line of scrimmage. His play calling is shades of last season, he certainly is the weak link of our entire coaching staff.

Well people can blast away at Helton all they want but I won't be one of them because I can see some of what he has to work with. Not dissing any players but we get pushed around a lot and that speaks of strength or lack of it.
Uh a good OC can help mask deficiencies in talent to a certain extent.

Can't really subscribe to this theory given they had 209 total yards and didnt cross the 50 until the 3rd quarter.

MTSU gained 288 yards as a point of comparison.

Helton looks almost completely overmatched at this point.

If JG would go through his progressions, there were plays where receivers were wide open and he throws to the receiver he stares down.

Hopefully that can be coached out, but the 3rd and 12 run plays have me baffled just as much.
