Tyler Bray discussion (merged)

Simms may continue to start for a while longer but fans are delusional if they think this another situation like last year. Simms doesn't have the physical tools to be successful as a QB in the SEC. Crompton had what it took physically it just took some time to put it together. We can't and won't pass it down the middle because it will be intercepted almost every time with Simms. Everything on the offense looks promising and Chaney's game plan looks good other than the fact we don't have a QB who can make the throws against top quality defenses. The defense was so thin and on the field so long it appeared they had thrown in the towel but at some point you reach a physical breaking point. I agree we should stay the course for a bit longer but Bray needs to be getting some garbage time snaps. People better be prepared for a long season if Simms continues to start.

I think this is assuming a little too much. His dad said the reason for the move was that things weren't working out at Farragut for his other son. He hinted that Tyler knows he is probably our QB in the future (either later this year or next). His dad said that Tyler wants to play on Sundays some day, and someone made the statement that you can't prepare for that any better than starting at QB in the SEC. His dad responded with something like "Oh I know, and thats something we have talked about before too".

Tyler knows how big of an opportunity this is, lets not just assume he's quitting the team because his family is moving home.

I'm just saying I won't be surprised if it does happen. He was already missing Cali even with his family in Knoxville. Sure he has a great opportunity here but homesickness sometimes overrides that.

after seeing how mentally tough Simms isn't I would have to agree with the comments once made by Steve Young regarding phil simms raising his sons in a "laissez-faire kind of atmosphere."

ok .......do any of you guys actually read the whole thread before you post something............no one has said that bray is ready to qb tennessee to the sec title.........no one.........which is exactly why we are saying this season is not gonna suck anymore than with simms at qb. So why not put bray in and get him mentally and physically ready as so many of you have repeated. Ill take and extra 3+ loses this year just to get him ready. Get his confidence there and let him know that he is our guy. So tired of hearing freshman cant play qb in sec. Fact ..........the two best qbs tennessee ever had started as freshmen..................jeeeeezzzzzz

last time, no one has said on this thread that bray is ready..................thats exactly why we are saying he needs to be in the game for the next 3 years!!!!!!!!!!

Never mind, the MAN wouldn't let type what I wanted to.

How is he not mentally tough? That's kind of the reason he's playing over Bray.

I guess you missed Chris Simms playing with ruptured organs at Tampa Bay, or coaches popping his fingers back into place in 01 against Colorado.

At this point I feel very good having Bray at UT...we'll never know what he has until Coach turns him loose. Wonder when that will Be?

:lolabove:Same old story....2nd team qback is always better. He was put in a game like situation in practice and threw 4 ints. , didn't have a clue. I think he will be good but he isn't ready....I just hope Simms doesn't get hurt.

JESUS.... the kid did as much as he could. the coaches where calling concervitive plays bc we are so young. lets not kill this guy like we did crompton. he is just running the plays the coaches are giving him and i thought he did pretty good.

:rock:Same old crap with all the armchair coaches out there....whine, complain and criticize players if anything goes wrong at all....just like Arian foster.....231 yards against the Colts today...what do all negative whiners have to say about that?

There were some dropped passes too, so the receivers have to make those catches. One was for a crtical 3rd down. Also, I'm a little concerned about Simms having several passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. He's got to do a better job of throwing all the way across the field late. Like another poster said, the D will be there before the ball gets there. I think Flor-duh now will say that Simms can't make the passes downfield and will tee up there D to stop the ground game. I say simpler passes and this is still a work in progess. However, the VOLS played great until the weather delay, probably gave the Ducks time to catch their breath and figure out what we were doing. Lack of depth will definitely catch up to us,however, you can see this team definitely has potential. Gators have more talent & depth but wouldn't count our guys out. I don't believe they will be tougher than the ducks. This would be a great W for us if we can hang in there.

I agree but I don't believe changing quarterbacks changes anything as far as how season plays out.

We are what we are. a 4-5 win team. I said that prior to UT Martin and I maintain that. Although, if we continue to get players beat up each week 4 might be ceiling

simms has a head start on most kids. just because of lineage, but does not have the arm for the sec. If he was lightning fast runner as a dual threat, but thats not the case, I will say this he stands in the pocket with hoof beats or maybe (duck feet) pretty good. But he's not the whole team dropped passes, punt coverage, wrap up tackling. etc.

when did simms look mentally tough saturday was it the interception he threw that was returned 76 yrds for an Oregon score, oh wait it could've been the countless throws he tried to force because he has terrible field vision and it's starting to look like another case of "incrompetence" at the qb position

and look how JC ended the year....top rated QB in the conference

you put bray out there against the FL defense and he'll be in UT Medical Center by halftime!

I agree, but will make a PG13-rated attempt. If the team was better, you could start Bray, but it isn't there yet. I remmeber the great Peyton Manning as a freshman. They kep him on a shorter leash than Chaney kept Simms on last night, because even he wasn't ready to play at this level.

The difference is that we were loaded everwhere else. We had three tailbacks on that team that later started in the NFL (Garner, Hayden and Stewart) and a host of other players.

There is absolutely no reason to sacrifice Bray's future. With that said, we may see more of him the second half of the season.

Simms did hold the ball to long on several throws. He may have eyed the receivers a little too much. But.... It was his second start in an orange jersey!!!! further more his first start against a good defense. I felt like he made a couple really good throws, showed some good arm strength. I think he will learn from his mistakes and we will be competitive in most of our games. Overall it is a team loss. I think Matt will do a fine job. Bray is not ready to play yet. With that said lets give the Gators our best shot!!! GO VOLS!
Has it never occurred to anyone on here that holding on to the ball is required when you dont have a receiver that is open?

From what I gathered from the experts here...Bray is not doing so well in game situations during practice. As well, last week he did not do so well in the UTM game.

So....he needs time to grow. But I do think letting him play in the game where the Vols are clearly out of it would be a good thing.

Bray looked terrible in pregame warmups, he couldnt even hit unguarded receivers with consistency....
But Simms isnt much better, I have never seen a QB telegraph his throws more than Simms, that includes Crompton at his worst...
And Simms' throwing motion causes all kinds of problems:

1) Cant throw over the middle because he throws with a downward trajectory, multiple tipped balls at the line of scrimmage - this also completely eliminates Stocker from the gameplan.
2) His deep balls are horrible because of the lack of trajectory and touch.
3) No pass protection + elongated delivery = no consistenty or timing.

Long story short, we are in for a long year but we all should have been prepared. I just hope the O-line can stay healthy enough to keep a decent running game going..its the only chance we have to win ballgames.

No it isn't. New grounding rules are as advantageous as possible.
