Ty Simpson to enter NFL draft

Going against advice of A J McCarron...

From Yahoo News..

During an appearance on "The Dynasty" podcast, three-time national champion A.J. McCarron spoke out with his opinion on the matter. He believes that another year of college football would be the best decision for Simpson to make.

“I think Ty’s gotta come back,” McCarron said. “I think if he enters, he’s a seventh-round...maybe five-to-seven."

Or he never had any interest in transferring lol y’all get all jazzed up by supposed inside information but the reality is very few have any idea what is going on or what the plan is

This is true and I’m not an exception to this. Most of these YouTube insiders just throw stuff at the wall hoping to gain credibility when they’re right. I remember one of the college football YouTube channels explicitly saying that Kiffin to Florida was a lock and it would be announced the Sunday after Ole Miss’s final regular season game. Well, we see how that worked out lol.

I'm ready for him to play. Why does everyone have such faith in the portal? Overrated
I give up. Perhaps it's that historically true freshman that aren't generational talents (and even a guy named Peyton that was a generational talent) struggle very hard to be successful in the SEC as freshmen.

Perhaps it's because QB is much different from HS to college and lots of great HS QBs, like Harrison Bailey..... whom many in Knoxville wanted to see start instead of Hooker or Milton, simply aren't that good.

Just perhaps.

Well let's see if George can do it since it doesn't look like any greats at QB are coming to Knoxville.

I usually don't put much stock in rumors or assumptions. I usually don't comment on them either, but this is getting silly. As the head coach, Heup can't ignore high school recruits and focus on only portal players. He can't ignore portal players either. That's why you have assistant coaches and coordinators. If you are an edge, you want to meet and get to know the head coach, but you probably are a little more concerned with your position coach and coordinator. Next, visits with high school kids are usually scheduled. Wouldn't look good to brush that off. Considering CJH has the use of a private jet aircraft and Jackson is maybe an hour flight, you can do both things. I read somewhere a perfect quote about CJH being there for portal recruits, these kids aren't 4th graders who need the teacher guiding them in a line around the school, holding hands in a line. We are talking about adults who are looking for a new school for a myriad of reasons. Maybe simple, maybe complex. As far as we fans are concerned, we need to let things happen as they will.
Sensible, and that's all we can do, obviously, like it or not of course. And like it or not, I'm here for it still.
However, the fan in some of us, doesn't want to see "the secret plan" play out the way it has so many times before, with the way it appears to be going again, now.
We've seen, before, a lackluster pursuit of needs in the portal and it has left our cupboard bare, compared to our immediate competitors. And sure enough, the "being selective" while other schools load up, and players come out of the portal quickly trope is playing out again, one could surmise...
Just sayin'

We are a serious injury and a twisted ankle from rolling out a walk on QB against someone like Bama.

Is that so bad?

I mean TBF-we have been in that situation since like 2021 when Heupel got here.

21 and 22- Hooker and Milton with Gaston Moore as 3rd stringer

23 Milton and Nico with Gaston still in 3rd

24 Nico then our 4* guy who just transfered out. Gaston still around in ,3rd lol

Most teams are basically screwed by the time you get to 3rd string. Ohio State caught lightning in a bottle in their 2014 playoff when they had to start their 3rd stringer. Only real success story I can recall-and be was far from a walk on.

I'm sure we had even a worse mess under Cornbread and the trumpet blower, but zi don't want to depress myself thinking about it.

True, but Hooker and Milton were old guys, grad transfers, here and Gaston Moore had experience with Heupel from UCF.

I'm just extremely uncomfortable rolling with a redshirt freshman with very few college snaps, a true freshman, and a walk on in the SEC.

I cannot imagine that going well for us.

I understand your point-I do

Just saying that we can't keep going down the road we have been. One year starter after one year starter. It's just not working for us

As I have said on here many times-I really do not care if we recruit QBs out of college or if we recruit out of high school and develop-but we cannot do both.

Simple reality is that if we get a transfer QB starter for next year-we have just lit $7-$8 million on fire with the NIL deals for GMac and Brandon. They will be gone and all the money we have given them and time recruiting them home. All with them never seeing the field.

What a waste.

Our schedule next year is daunting to say the least. May be time to rip off the bandaid and take a bit of a mulligan. It's gonna have to happen eventually anyway. Truth be told, that is what should have happened in 2025. Our schedule was a joke. We could have started my 86 year old mother under center and still won 8 games. We will not have that luxury next season.

There are these things called airplanes and you can make a visit and be back in town in literally an hour.
If the trip is that short and so insignificant, why fire up the jet engines on said aeroplane in the first place?
I believe the other posters hit on the theory that, there just wasn't any interest from the other party and CJH covered his tracks with the visit to the '27 kid.
But still, at the front end of the portal, there were several interesting and viable starting quarterbacks available, portaled. Thus, we could deduce that CJH passed on heavily pursuing one of the headline talents, in favor of shooting a looong shot with a kid not even in the portal on the verge of declaring for the draft? Or maybe CJH whiffed on any of those same talents and pivoted to Ty Simpson. Either way, the optics are bad

Sure he can while the portal is open and you have kids on campus for a visit. No offense to the kid but a 3* '27 prospect wouldn't be on my priority list to visit at the moment. Kid likely to flip between now and '27 anyway.
It's a new era in college sports and doing things the old way is going to get you left behind
Gabriel Ossenda was a 3* prospect while we were recruiting him. he ended up a 5* on some sites, and ranked as a high 4 on all of them.

Zay Anderson was barely a top 500 player when we recruited him. Ended up #240 a mid level 4*

both were in state recruits that Heupel spent time on, would you consider either of those wastes even though they were 3*

IF that is ALL Heupel was doing.
