First, while Pearl's transgressions are worthy of sanction, I struggle to understand why he would be fired over it now. When it broke, he was punished. But at the end of the season turns out that is not enough ? Seems to me either something else happened or someone in power was so unhappy about it that it took on more weight than it deserved. I can't help but think that his being let go is about a lot more than the photo and the NCAA lying issue.

Second, what do you think would have happened had Pearl resigned when it happened? Would the team have fared better or worse on the season and in the tourney?

These questions are related in my mind because it is apparent that both Hamilton and Pearl believed at the time that the punishment was enough to ride this out. Were they just wrong or did something or someone happen in the interim ?

I'm guessing UT felt like they had no choice but to get rid of Pearl. Probably talked to the NCAA to see what would probably be done to Pearl or whatever. If nothing would have been done, he would be at UT as long as he wanted too.
And I don't think it would of mattered if Pearl as there or not. Same results IMO.

Unethical conduct charge is the backbreaker. Once that hit Pearl was done. Nobody has survived that.

It seems that the bump violation a few days after his apology is going to be the killer. Had that not occured, I think UT would have been able to find a way to keep him. Once he tried to cover that up as well, he was finished, they just weren't going to fire him in the middle of the season.

Bingo.

Whether it's what happened or not, I don't see why UT couldn't just say they were waiting until the notice of allegations came in and then made their decision.

I thank the university has handled this poorly. It looks like the university is saying we would have kept you, in spite of the coming sanctions, but you underperformed this year. Had you won more games....
