A thought occured to me today. It seems to me that Hamilton is dead set against firing Pearl for the sole purpose of making the NCAA mad enough to give him (Pearl) the brunt of the punishments only to fire him after the sanctions are handed down, leaving mens bb in better shape then expected. Pearls new contract has been put on hold. If Hammy waits until after the hearing when Pearl is officially charged with major violations, he can fire him with just cause and not owe him a penny. Then he can hire a coach with no sanctions attached to him as far as recriuting, ect..Bill Haslam, sitting back and letting Hamilton somewhat fix his own mess, will then swoop in and fire HIM.
Again, just a thought...hanging up to listen.

I believe that so much goes on in College Sports behind the scenes, that this is completely plausible.

Could be. All the people I know who defend Ham always talk about his ability to deal with cash.

Pearl isn't working under contract right now.

His was terminated when he admitted to lying to the NCAA.

He can be shown the door at anytime.

That contract was terminated under the agreement that a new one with less money would be written up which it was. All NCAA coaching contracts can be nullified with a major violation to the coach however.

I believe in the letter Hamilton sent him it said that Pearl was an At-Will employee, unless I missed a new contract.

yea, at this point, pearl is working without a safety net. there is no grand conspiracy by hammy to keep him around to salvage anything. pearl is still here bc he made ut basketball relevant. hammy could decide not to give him a new contract tomorrow and ut wouldnt owe him a dime.

Hmmm, not sure about that but even then IMO holding on to him for now and using him as a sanction shield so to speak would be pretty smart.

Hamilton didn't lie to the NCAA, he didn't cause Kiffin to leave us. When Kiffin was committing NCAA violations I'm sure Kiffin wasn't giving Hamilton the play by play of infractions and I'm not talking about those secondary violations. Also everybody was screaming for him to fire Fulmer. He did and now he's being villanized by some. Look at the renovations. Hamilton has had a lot to do with that. Why all the Hamilton hate? Is it because he hired Kiffin? I'm confused! Help me understand it.

Don't you mean escape goats?

Man I really hope Pearl does take the brunt of this, and is fired like he deserves to be for running this program into the dirt with his lies, and cheating. I just hope The Vols can get a decent BB coach after all the smoke clears.

I don't know when or if Pearl will be fired, but I think the sanction shield theory is way off. If we fire Pearl before receiving sanctions, the program probably will barely be touched. If anything, keeping him around is the opposite of a sanction shield. Also, looking for a new head coach in August would be very difficult.

I hope our program isn't tanked over a cookout.

Yes, he should have fired Fulmer. After the 2005 season. That season was significant because it was that season that showed Fulmer's incompentency. He destroyed that team. He lost to a very inferior Vandy team and allowed Spurrier and USCe to pass us up in football.

Hamilton hired Kiffin and was responsible for monitoring his behavior as coach. The overall perception of the reputation of Tennessee athletics has taken a major hit under Hamilton's leadership. Those facilities might be nice and might become a memorial to what was once a great program. With Hamilton this is becoming more and more of a possibility.

When did Bill Haslam get hiring/firing power at the University of Tennessee?

Whenever his family donates most of the money and support. Jimmy funded the jumbotron for Neyland, had alot to do with restoration of TBA and Neyland, and they basically run Knox County....so
