Two Rookie Coaching Mistakes

The Vols coaching staff, which I do respect and hope they jell just like our players, must understand that this is SEC football and one cannot let down their guard or play it safe for 60 minutes. They did a GREAT job prepping the team and having the intensity where it needed to be but IMO, the coaching staff let down the players, and after waaaay too many years of Fulmer doing the same, I hope this group of coaches rebounds.

University of Tennessee Athletics Football

He was a linebacker and fullback in high school, just as most fullbacks are. As a freshman at UT, he was a fullback. As a sophomore at UT, he was a fullback. As a junior, he is now a linebacker.

The guy even said it himself during the DD show just this weekend. He said he was recruited to play LB and started there in the spring of his Freshman year. He was then asked to move to FB and did so because he wanted to do whatever would help the team. My point is, he did not miss the tackle simply becuase he played fullback last year. He has had plenty of practice making tackles. According to your link, he only had like a million tackles in high school. He is listed as a fullback on the front page of your link but a LB when you click on his name. :good!:

We can just agree to disagree. I don't think him playing FB had much to do with him missing the tackle and you believe it did. That's cool with me.

Him being a fullback for 2 years totally affects his ability to make a 1-on-1 tackle against a bruiser who took out about 5 of our defenders. It's not his fault. It's just the way it goes. Had he been making tackles against SEC runners for the past 2 years, I'm positive he'd have made that tackle. Instead, he's doing something he hadn't really done since 2007.
FWIW, the link goes to his current page which lists him as a LB, cause that's what he is now. His first 2 years in Orange, he was strictly a FB, and seemingly a finesse one at that.

Great call my foot...if it had failed everyone would be calling him an idiot including you. If AJ makes that tackle, momentum comes to us....do you think a pro coach would have made that call? I don't think so.

Great calls sometimes involve risk. In this case, Meyer made a great call. No one in my section I was sitting in saw it coming. No, I would not have called him an idiot for making that call. He knew his defense was more than capable of stopping us if he had failed. Read DD comments concerning the call.

What does pro football have to do with anything?

Just before halftime of the Ducks game, the Vols were dominating both sides of the line with good play calling and execution. We were up 13-3 when we did the unthinkable, we decided to play it safe on offense. Instead of trying to win the game, we tried not to lose it and we were really lucky that the ducks only scored 10 points on us and tied the game 13-13 going into the locker room. Advantage: Ducks. So much so that the second half was a nightmare waiting to happen because we lost the drive to win and all the momentum.
Fast forward to the gator game and we once again were calling good offensive plays and matching them step for step with good defensive plays and execution when the coaches once again took their eye off the ball. Literally. Fake punt: Game over.

Thank you. I got a good laugh out of your opinion.

Didn't really put it together until the fake happened, but did anyone else see the blocker on the left side in the backfield point to Hines just before the snap? Thought it was odd until he got the snap and took off.

We are 1-2 and not many Vol fans are laughing. We have talented players and talented coaches but the coaches and players need to be on their toes for 60 minutes. Is this thought still making you laugh?

DD admitted they should have been in "punt safe" instead of return. But great call by Meyer. BTW, that was there longest rush of the afternoon.

WTH would we be in anything other than punt safe----or punt block? WE have ZERO return game anyway!
Son of a biscuiteater.

We're a young team with a brutal schedule. We're playing teams in the top ten that have their system in place. We are a team in transition after three coaches in three years.

We're losing based on the schedule. If we played Wisconsin's schedule we'd be 3-0 and singing the praises of CDD. We are not a team that is prepared enough to compete with top ten teams, bottom line.

To call getting beat by a better team a coaching mistake is pointless.

So you think UT would beat Arizona State? Hmmm.

Dooley also said something along the lines of "We had a player in position to try and make a play to stop the fake punt, but he was the only one and had to make a solo open field tackle on a shifty player. I don't care who you are, that is going to be difficult."

We had a guy there, but we were clearly caught off guard and unprepared.

Sometimes you don't necessarily have to make a mistake to be outcoached though. On that particular play, Meyer just outschemed us. Masterful play call.
