Surely this will not end up well. They argue that this will promote "healthy conversation", but it seems to me like it is just going to end up being used to lower visibility of popular tweets without traceability. I can't help but think that this will be used to suppress conservative ideas since that's been their proclivity to this point. Now they can do it in secret.

Am I missing something? Why was it bad to be able to see which posts were most 'popular' or which ones were getting 'ratioed'?

Twitter reveals big changes to conversations and new camera features

Edit: Article was updated.
CORRECTION (March 13, 2019, 3:30 p.m. ET): An earlier version of this article misstated the changes that Twitter is testing in a prototype app. Twitter is testing putting engagement counts on replies behind a user tap, not removing the engagement counts for tweets.
Thanks to @Velo Vol for the update.

Solution: start your own conservative social messaging platform. It's an echo chamber amongst you anyway. No rational thought or facts considered if they counter the Trump/Fox narrative.

Maybe I'm not as hip to Twitter as some of you folks (I've never made an account), but how would removing likes and retweets disproportionately affect conservative speech?

Because whaaaaaaa!!!!

The key to the current Trump/Fox narrative is "Sure, we are crooks and liars. But when people point that out its unfair because we don't like it."

Being born in the 50's I've had the pleasure of seeing NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC over the air and cable news networks destroy themselves. I've also watched as just about every news-paper that I've ever read die out. Now we get to watch the destruction of Facebook, Twitter and a host of other fascist news organizations go by the way side as well.

If there are a number of Likes or Retweets, then it's easy to point out/identify hypocrisy in the search results for a topic, if a tweet with the most likes is buried down the list. Without the ability to see the numbers for yourself, then how are we to know if the results we are seeing are true?

I agree that the changes do not overtly affect one party, but when you can 'hide' the numbers, then biased people can affect the news that reaches people.

I do not want to live in an echo chamber. I always hear out what the 'other side' is saying on a topic. I do want the results I see pushed to the top to be diverse and not 'filtered' or 'sorted'.

I say it will affect conservative viewpoints because it is no secret that Twitter (and facebook/Instagram/others) is run by liberal people.

You can't possibly believe this is even remotely exclusive to the right.

Depends on the grounds for the criticism.

There is far too much claiming of victim status by both sides but for different reasons. Racism and sexism for the left. But on the right, what uses to be apologizing and ducking and weaving when called out for criminal misconduct, or offensive statements, has turned in to "How dare you call me out on this!" Followed by shameless self promotion and monetization of it from others they stoke up with exaggerations about being stifled.

The reason that Carlson should be fired is not because he's conservative. It's because he's a racist loud mouthed jerk who embarrasses the network. But he has convinced people that calls for his firing are because he's conservative.

Just a complete fraud.

If I could play pretend and be the big shot of each network, I'd fire plenty of people.

If I want to keep my ratings, and possibly increase them, I don't fire bowtie jesus for saying racist ****. To a great chunk of his viewers, it's a fantastic way to masturbate to the 1A.

Serious question, do you only think things that are said on Fox news are racist? The crap that gets spewed from CNN and similar networks is absolutely vilifying white people. Is that not racist?

What other options do right-wingers have in that time slot? Every other network is liberal, right? If that's the case, should you not combine the ratings for all shows in that time slot and put it up against Carlson?

Which is it?
Looks to me like a good indicator of just how many 25-54 olds are watching TC . You do understand how ratings work right . The more people that watch TC the higher his ratings . Don’t assume who watches it , the ratings don’t care who just, how many .

Lol. Keep pretending like people don't watch a commentary they want to hear.

I know exactly how ratings work. You can apply that same stupid argument to the liberals in that same time slot.

Twitter is nothing more than a leftist echo chamber.

They don't want alternate opinions and they silence whatever they deem as "hate speech", which can be anything against the status-quo.

I've heard it both ways on all channels.

I do think that there is substantially more bigotry of all types displayed on Fox on a routine basis than elsewhere. It is usually done with the slightest "I'm not racist, but ..." Or as a question "Is she wearing an habib because she promotes Sharia law"?

It gives wriggle room to avoid the label. But its apparent the point that is being made.
