Samsung, LG, then Vizio in that order for LED's between 40 and 49 inch. Cant go wrong with any of those. Make sure to pay attention to contrast ratio.

As much as I cant stand going in there. Walmarts prices on tv's are very hard to beat. Decent selections too.

Personally, I think you need to either read a ton of reviews on the ones you are considering or go look at them for a while.

Sony Bravia is probably a name used to indicate mid-tier - I thought all were Bravias. It used to be that the letters XBR were attached to the higher end sets. Sometimes the difference is in technology or the panel with XBRs using the latest.

Overall, I've found Samsungs to have the most in your face color (too much for me) and Sony's to be the softest. That said, I bought a Sony 42 LCD several years ago after reading positive reviews AND viewing in the store several times. Very pleased but tried another Sony recently and took it back for a Panasonic plasma (which is awesome).

Finally, you may want to consider plasma. They are cheap in that range. Panasonics are really good and Samsungs get good reviews too.

Trust your eyes and brain over what someone tells you to buy.

Agree on the Plasma...can't beat the price...the second Samsung is a 51 inch Plasma, and it was only $500 bucks compared to the $2500, I spent on the 55 inch Samsung LED last year..
I went in to get the 46 inch Panasonic Plasma which was also $499, but went with the larger Samsung for the same price

Prices are crazy. My first plasma - the venerable Pioneer 5050 - was $3500! And that was because the new model had come out - normal price was closer to 5K.

I will say that the Pioneer still looks great (7 or 8 years old) and still gets compliments from everyone that sees it.

the only knock I've heard is they don't do great in rooms with alot of light...
for what it's worth, the room I put the Samsung Plasma in I just bought has windows on the entire 2 story north facing wall...and it's not been an issue..

here's an old picture of the light and windows in the room, before we moved in

The knocks are as VIL said glare in a bright room - the screen is glass or glass like.

The use more power but studies showed it amounts to about $12/year more than LCD/LED. If you saved just $60 compared to a comparable LCD/LED it would pay for 5 years of the power difference.

The are more susceptible to burn-in although if you break it in properly and don't keep in on the crazy "Vivid" setting this isn't really a problem. Most likely a problem if you use them primarily for gaming and leave the game on for long periods.

They are heavier than LCD/LED but still much lighter than tube TVs.

On the positive:

No viewing angle problems - look great from any angle.

Deep, rich blacks.

Deep, rich color.

To me, it's personal preference. I prefer the plasma picture look but others prefer the LCD/LED look. That is the most important criteria.
