Tuttle hit on video?

I was bothered by the TN player apparently stomping a downed UGA players helmut on a ST return in the 1st quarter.

While it can be argued what the GA player had hold of, I came to two conclusions.
1. the GA player no longer should have been holding anything - which is no excuse for attempting to injure him.

2. He didn't stomp on his head (try to cause any injury).
As UT fans we should know that you can "stomp" a players fingers and actually hurt them or...
You can place your foot on a helmet, which the UGA player could feel no pain or injury, and use the leverage to pull free.

The two were definitely heated but putting your weight on a helmet without any momentum behind it, would by NO means inflict pain. If it does, we need new helmet manufacturers now!!

After watching the replay it didn't look like a cheap shot to me. It looked like a penalty should be called but the Georgia player was just trying to make a block and picked a bad angle and made a bad decision.

How was that not a cheap shot? the UGA lineman dove head first at Shy's knee while he was running away from him?

Definitely a little extra unf to the stomp, but dude wouldn't let go so he doesnt get to act innocent.

well it was getting his helmet rolled in the mud, shouldn't have happened

but i would make him let go too :)

is there a rule
against nut grabbing ? in Publick ?

I know I'm bias but it looked like John Kelly was thrown off balance by the grab. Might have been a bit aggressive, but Kelly also didn't have a lot of places he could have put his foot during the grab.

edit:Also, it wasn't his crotch. Kelly was being yanked down by his jersey.

Thats exactly how I saw it. Kelly obviously didn't "stomp" on the guys head. He was off balance and being pulled and simply had to put his foot down. There was nothing intentional on Kelly's part imo.

Not a blatantly dirty play as has been claimed in this thread....hope he's well and back for the alabubba game as CBJ said.

That's a clip at worst, and that's debatable. Clearly hits hin in yhe side hip. Tuttle had him beat and the player had two choices, watch him run by or attempt to slow him down. Doesn't look dirty or intentional too me.

It was a dirty hit. There have been OL that have come forward after their playing days are over and have admitted they try to injure with hits like these.

The article says "jersey", but his jersey is tucked in. That's not his jersey he's holding.

What? He clearly dove at his knees/ankles from behind. That is clearly a cheap shot and should have been flagged.

Guess I'm blind then as I see the GA lineman make initial contact with the hip/upper thigh with his helmet on Tuttle's front, then slid down lower as Tuttle moved away from the impact and gravity pulls the GA lineman downward. I don't see where he fell on Tuttle's leg/ankle as has been claimed? Looks like a legal block to me as I understand the rules. Tuttle's injury appears to be just another of many freak injuries that happen on a football field - nothing malicious jumps out to me?

Again, I'm older and the vision isn't what it once was so maybe I'm missing it - not looking to argue simply stating what I see in the video. :eek:k:

You can't block below the waist from the back OR SIDE if the ball has left the tackle box. Inside or directly in front of the ball is legal IF the player is facing you.

This rule exists exactly for what we saw against UGA- it's cheap and causes injuries.

Yep... There's a zone that's basically 4 yards on either side of the ball along the LOS where they can cut and block low from the front or side as long as the defender isn't engaged high by another blocker. Outside of that, it's illegal to block below the waist in the open field - much less from behind or the side.
