Turned a corner I think

I'm not going to read through hundreds of pages to see if any one else has already said this, so if I'm not the first to express this observation, my apologies.

I've been watching this team for years now, as many of you have. With so many opportunities to see failure this past decade, looking for reasons, seeing many of them, sometimes you can overlook some and not really give them enough relevance. What I saw Saturday took time to realize at first, then admire it as I recognized it and feel it just like CJP. I was sitting here, down a bit, frustrated reading the boards and much negativity, watching this team journey to another loss. During the third quarter, this team seemed to change. It happened when the Georgia player came in and did the unsportsmanlike penalty. After that, the guys looked to be standing taller, not confident like they were going to win like Georgia, but pissed off finally that they weren't gonna take it anymore. This team hasn't shown any real fight in years, they get a little up in wins, but I've never really seen passion like I watched yesterday. It was just a start and hasn't fully grown yet, but they changed. Deciding that enough was enough. If we're going to lose, fine, but it won't be because we didn't fight back. I saw a team defense, with a few exceptions, that was trying with strip and generate that turnover to flip the game, I saw an attitude on offense that just because we aren't as talented, we aren't going to give in. They made me hopeful for the future, moreso than I've been. I can understand the emotions by coach, it's wonderful to finally see the beginnings of that occur. I believe it will spread and grow stronger as the season elapses. It may not get the victory we all want, but it has, I believe, truly began the climb back. Chip on the shoulder, playing with determination and anger, hitting back instead of circling and jabbing. This is a team that will start being fun to watch again.

I completely agree. It looked to me like something clicked with the TEAM after that play, like they were ready to fight for each other. I hope it carries over and we come to show progress like we did in the second half. I also hope Taylor and company get meaner and meaner.

I'm excited that we have an elite defensive coordinator. Can't wait to get his own players on the roster. The biggest concern is the offense. But the good thing is I dont think it will ever be as bad as it is this year

Are we officially moral victory u?

I liked the fight they showed, but its.meaningless unless it turns into results.

I am not a fan of moral victories and do not believe in them. At the end of the day, you either get a W or a L.

Yesterday was a loss. BUT, I did see improvement in the team, I saw passion, and I saw a coach. So, we lost. But I walk away feeling a lot better than I did after the Florida game.

Not a moral victory. But a team buying in, taking baby steps, and a coach vested in his players.

When Butch got up in front of everyone at A&M and told about how the team didn't quit, you guys cooked him.

I was done with Jones but Ga lost focus once they when up 24-0 and it appeared Tennessee had quit.

Bottom Line:
(actually, there are several of them, but...)

- We have, at best, a middle-of-the-SEC roster, and that's probably being generous;
- This roster does not have the athletes that Pruitt and Helton need to run their schemes;
- The only fix is recruiting. It will take at least two full cycles;
- The limitations of this OL mean that UT cannot run, or throw, at a level that will win many SEC games;
- The defense is getting better, but there's only so much you can do at the Daytona 500 with a stock Camaro;
- Now for a spot of good news. If they stay healthy, this team will get better as the season progresses. I can see us being competitive with the likes of Vandy, UK, and just maybe USCe down the stretch. Key words are "healthy" and "maybe". Six wins are not out of reach, and three wins are not out of the realm of possibility.

I see no reason to not give Chryst a real tryout against Auburn or Bama. I'm basing that solely on the fact that JG continues to have issues with his vision, movement, and timing. I don't think he's going to get any better this year, and this is a 16 point offense against P5 opponents with JG at the wheel. That ain't gonna get it done. Might as well see what Chryst can do against live competition. No points are the same as 16 against the likes of Auburn and Bama. Good enough for 2nd Place.

Someone else posted it, but I'll repeat it here: It's not time to fire anybody. Pruitt, Helton, Sherrer, JG, or even that idiot in the checkerboard overalls who acts like we're up by 30 when we're down by 19 (really, guy?). Fact is, Coach Pruitt might be our last, best chance to return UT football to SEC and national prominence. Cut him loose after a couple or three mediocre years, and all you've done is load the roster for the next guy, who likely won't be the best guy. We've been down that road over the last 10 years, and folks...we're at the end of the line. It's Pruitt, or we are well and totally screwed. JMO.

Next three weeks are going to be a test for UT, and VN. UT can use the bye week to rest up, heal some bruises, and work on the basics. VN can...and will...use it to create 500 new threads on stuff we've already talked about. It is what it is. Then comes Auburn and Bama. Anything less than blowouts will be progress. If we have a shot at the Upset of the Decade, it will be against Auburn, but I wouldn't take out a 2nd mortgage to make that bet.

Gotta take the long view here. If I'm right, which happens about once a year, we've got the right guy. Give him a chance to prove me wrong.

Go Vols.

Lets stop with the moral victory u stuff.

Its realizing the entire program sucks, has sucked and will suck a bit longer. UT is a mediocre program. Looking for positives doesnt mean you're settling for mediocrity, its realizing the reality of it.

They lost by almost thirty.

Again.

The only thing around that corner, is another beat down...
And you expected them to lose by 60 and in the 4th they were 24-12? And if not for a fumble they could of potentialy cut it to under 7?
But despite all the positives you still gotta be negative

It's an idiotic small minded mind set to not be able to see potential and positives in a program rebuilding. We still have people that think this is the same Tennessee as the late 90's

Had Banks not fumbled we would have lost by 19, we were only down by 12 with 8 minutes left. It wasn't the blowout whipping many on here said it was going to be. We still have miles to go upfront on the O-line but we are going to improve as move along into the season I believe. We were beaten, but we played with them pretty well overall. Their first touchdown was a bad break for us. Could have easily been a big play fumble. It probably should been a long field goal try at least my times on that type of play. This game could have easily been a 12 point loss as easy as it was 26. They didn't just overwhelm us or nothing like that. If we had played like that against UF might not have won but we wouldn't have gotten beaten like we did. 6 turnovers was the killer in that game. GBO!!!!!

I don't think for a minute that GA would ease up on us or any team for that matter. They are trying to prove themselves to be the best team in the country. BAMA wouldn't ease up so what makes you think GA would.

Kirby and Pruitt are friends, that's why he wouldn't run it up. Scoring two TD's at the end was as close as running it up as you will see.

GA just missed on several wide open throws. If you count the "almosts" for vols, you have to count them the other way too.

Bama hasn't played starters hardly in any 3rd quarter. 3rd string is usually in the 4th. The top teams don't care about blowing out lesser teams they just want to stay healthy for down the road. Either Georgia was playing around or they're not #2 in the country. Then again I haven't seen them be dominant yet this year. Missouri should have beat them. Scar is proving to be mediocre at best. They still got LSU and Auburn so I'll wait and see how those games go.

It’s going to slowly turn into results. You don’t go from horrible to elite. You go from horrible to meh, to watchable, to competitive, then to elite. We are between horrible and meh right now.

A bit misleading. With 4 minutes to play, Georgia had just run the 12th play of a 75 yard, 7:39 minute, soul-crushing drive that extended the lead to 19 points. They scored 1 play later, and then for good measure, again a minute or 2 later after the 1 billionth fumble of Jeremy Banks’ very young career. To act as though Tennessee ever actually threatened Georgia in a manner that made the outcome ever in doubt is a bit disingenuous.
I don't think anyone is saying that Tennessee was ever a threat to win the game. Honestly, until the 4th quarter it kinda reminded me of the 09 Florida game. Remember when everyone was talking about how Urban was going to save his timeouts so he could run up the score, and after the game everyone was mad because they only beat us by 10. We were never a threat to win that game either, but it was the first time I saw any fight in them that year. They kinda turned it around a bit from there and actually had a couple of good wins. Don't know if this team will turn anything around, or win any games worth talking about, but it was the first real sign of life I've seen.

Not sure why you are confused. There is a mutual respect among them. Kirbs did drop 2 TD's at the end.

I am not discounting them, my point was this game was not the epic beatdown many were saying it was going to be. Georgia did miss one play when the Qb slightly underthrew his rb but he still could have caught it and if he did he would have been gone. There was another throw were the receiver could have made a play but I noticed he looked up at the approaching defender and took his eye of the ball. Both team had a few bad breaks. The late game fumble was a gimme score. I think 31-12 is about where this game should have been taking away both teams bad luck. But in no way was it a massacre, a solid convincing win maybe but not a boat race beatdown by no means. We limited turnovers for the most part but still had a few critical silly mistakes like the penalties on the punt. But overall we played much better at uga than we did florida. GBO!
