I hope the situation with Blair isn't Dobbs all over again.

Coach Jones cannot make the same mistake he made last year when he waited until Worley got hurt to insert Dobbs. If Blair is inserted into the lineup because of injury and he performs better than Kerbyson, we might have to start questioning whether this staff knows who to play ahead of who.

Only problem with that is Blair hasn't outperformed just like Dobbs didn't outperform. So no, I won't question them because there's no way of foreseeing that.

I think if he said current junior for a rising senior it would confuse the hell out of people

Correct. People need to get over it. "Rising" is the right term. The academic year does not determine the player's eligibility year. That's why a redshirt stays a redshirt even though the redshirt freshman is a sophomore regarding their academic work.

Players often have different athletic and academic classification. So, no, the term rising (on the athletic side) doesn't go into effect during the summer. It goes into effect as soon as the playing season is completed.

Technically, they're not even "rising" until they finish this year's academics. For now, whoever he's calling a "rising senior" is still a junior. And so on. Over the summer they'll be "rising" whatever, and then come start of the new academic year in the fall they'll lose the "rising" qualifier.

But who gives a poop, we know what he means. Whether he says "future senior" or "rising senior" or "current junior" we'll understand. It's not like anyone reading his article doesn't already know that next fall Pig will be a senior, Josh a junior, Jalen a sophomore, and Shy a freshman, anyway. :)

Josh Smith will be a redshirt sophomore.

BS. Don't you understand the great football minds that sit behind their keyboards and evaluate talent is much superior to experienced coaches who see players everyday in real time? That overexposure that coaches get muddles their minds whereas us keyboard cowboys can objectively call the shots from press clippings and analysis from VN postings.

It is. Rucker is writing in the context of players in positions they'll be in come Fall 2015 where they will be academically advanced from where they currently are.

People are just being snooty. There are plenty of legitimate things to pick on Rucker for, this isn't one of them.

Listening to Swain this morning. Said "I just don't know what's up with Josh Malone right now". Said he looked much better when he saw him at practice last week. Ended by saying "he's just not ready to play big-time football right now. Period."

Anybody have any insight?

Edit: evidently Reed Carringer and Houston Kress were at practice yesterday as well. For fair balance, said he made some excellent catches in competitive periods. However, they kinda echoed Swain in saying that at times he just gives poor effort. Said there a pass in particular that he couldve caught but he didn't even extend his arms to offer at it.....said that DeBord, Azzani and Marquez North all at one time jumped all over him.

Ah shoot, sorry to hear this. Means he hasn't yet turned the corner on maturity.

Sorry, KB, I have zero insight. Just a few suppositions:

1. Girls.
2. Friends with values contrary to those of the team.
3. Trouble back home in Gallatin.
4. Alcohol or drugs.
5. Railing against authority.

It's hard being 18-19 years old. What's important at that age is often not what would be important to the very same person in the same situation if he were 5-10 years more mature.

It's frankly amazing that we find as many young men as we do who have such maturity and focus and drive.

Josh Malone simply isn't one of them yet. That's my guess.

I don't think it's any of those.
Since he's been here... he's never really shown a fire. Not so much being lazy as it seems he doesn't desire to go all out.

He body catches waaaay to much. He's too tempered. He's not enough of a hot head! As silly as that sounds.
He doesn't have that edge... I think Azzani knows this too.

But he is still so talented that he can produce.

I'm a bit harsh on him, because he has so much talent... yet he doesn't even begin to use it properly for his position.
It's like he's just going through the motions...

I hope Pearson gets on fire this year.

I just hope he stays healthy. Made some very nice plays before the injury bug got him. If he stays healthy this season, he could be one of the top receivers in the SEC and put up crazy numbers. Kids exciting to watch with the ball in his hands.

Those damn freshmen ... its almost as if they were somehow less mature than the rest of their teammates.

Why is it after over a year Blair still doesn't know the plays or understand the schemes? He's either just not worried about learning it all and his effort in the department is lacking, or to be blunt, really dumb.
