It goes much deeper than just perspective.
Back in the early 90's the Catholic Church released a catechism, I had a friend and co-worker who was a "devout" Catholic. I asked him what he thought about the church's stance on birth control (he disagreed with the stance), this led to a discussion about the weight behind the Pope's words. He ended up basically saying that he had never really thought about it. He then asked me how much my net pay had changed due to the new benefits package. I told him I had no clue, that I didn't know my net before the change or after. He knew both to the penny. That was a minor epiphany. Here was a "devout" Catholic who had never really thought about the weighted significance of the Pope's words but knew his net to the penny. We were polar opposites regarding the things that occupied our thoughts and minds and it really had nothing to do with perspective but with priority.
Also - don't forget the whole "he beat out 16 republicans in the primary" part.
