Trump says US will institute tariffs on steel and aluminum imports next week

Seriously?

I was discussing it with one of my metal working customers today. He pulled out some of his invoices and showed me the price increases and etc.
All of his stainless purchases were American made stainless and the price had gone up significantly, but not quite as much as the foreign goods.
I guess if I was a steel company I'd make some hay while the sun is out too....

We are subsidizing farmers impacted by retaliatory tariffs with $12 billion? That looks like an admission that Trump's policies aren't working and he is having to take steps to minimize the political damage. This is how you do welfare economics. This has nothing to do with capitalism.

Give it some time before completely damning it....if six months from now it still sucks.... damn it then

Maybe DTH who’s in the industry will take a peak in this thread and shed some light. I’m sure modernization would help but my guess a new steel plant would have about the same chance of getting approved as a new refinery. We haven’t built a new refinery in about 40 years.

I don’t want to return to the old days, I just want our government to quit tying our hands behind our backs.

This all day long

That's sort of counter to the whole strategy. I thought Trump had the steel industry on board with this.

I'm sure they were. If your competitors have to raise their price, you can raise yours too... just not as much and you're still the best deal in town.
Who wouldn't want to add an additional 20% to their margin?

I would have to read Huff's dissertation before I could answer that.

He's manipulating you. He can pretend like this his objective because he knows it won't happen

So what he says only matters when it fits your agenda?
So he says nice things about Putin and he’s serious but on trade deals he’s blowing smoke. Ok
Edit: I agree that it doesn’t matter what he say it’s what he does that’s important.

Oh well, I tried!!! IGNORE MY PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS AT DESTROYING TRADE RELATIONSHIPS. FOR SOME REASON THEY WOULDN'T NEGOTIATE! SAD!

what is the definition of insanity? Trying the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. Our trade policy hasn't gotten better, but we kept trying the same thing (or not trying). Succeed, fail, or end the same, Trump is trying something different.

By that reasoning your coaching staff should drive the team bus off a cliff. Because it's different.

By 2020, the left will be successfully converted into full fledged neocons. Advocating for limited government and military intervention in Moscow

I don't have a problem with what he said about Putin. I criticized you guys for being hypocrites about Obama/Trump vs. Russia.

Pay attention

China, tear down your tariffs!

I'm sure China is eager to look weak on the international stage and cave to Trump's tariffs. So naive. How much of a reduction in Chinese steel and aluminum have the tariffs created? Oh, that's right, their imports are still cheaper than domestic supplies. Oh, but the tariffs are surely hurting the second largest economy in the world, right? One that's subsidized by the government? Yeah, right. The thought that we're going to outlast China is also naive.

Then why won't they drop THEIR tariffs as well? Trump has offered to drop ALL tariffs if they will as well. Why won't they?

Simple. They don't need to. We still trade with them despite the tariffs, just like they still trade with us despite our tariffs.

When we talk about trade, we say US and China (or whatever other country), but really it's private companies, for the most part, doing the trading. In China, the government plays a more significant role. They manipulate their economy to benefit them-- they're a communist nation. Are we intent on doing the same?

If we want them to change, strong arm tactics won't work. Showing weakness by bowing to US demands will not work with the Chinese culture. May work in NYC real estate, but not in this case. The trick is going to be making China think it's in their best interest to drop tariffs and open markets. Even better if you can make them believe it was their idea or at least let them present it that way.
