True difference makers on the team currently...

You do realize we had AD’s that couldnt have cared less about men’s BB during those “ down” years. Barnes has been refreshing for sure , has been provided the resources to excel and has recruited well enough to get us back in contention like we were under Mears and Pearl. As I will continue to say, now he needs to prove he can coach come tournament time.

That is a common, often repeated narrative… but those uncaring ADs completed a 25,000 seat arena. The largest on campus basketball only facility in the country. Devoe was fired even though he was the 2nd winningest coach in UT history and had just returned TN to the NCAAT. Houston was hired only after Pat Kennedy said no thanks. He was the 2nd choice. Kevin O’Neil (first choice) was the hottest name in the mix after taking his team to the second weekend, and Buzz was expected to be an up and comer. Green was settled for because KO trashed DAD and it was impossible to make a good hire. Plus they hired Pearl (another first choice), another current Sweet 16 coach. That is some odd behavior for AD’s that couldn’t care less.

No, Barnes doesn’t need to prove a damn thing to the noisy idiots. The program is in as good a shape as it has ever been. They are almost guaranteed to make the tournament EVERY year now. They live in the top 25 and make the Sports Center highlights after every game instead of only after playing a ranked team. The ball eventually takes favorable bounces in the NCAAT.

Your Barnes can’t win in March spiel is as tired as your whine about his $5 million and 5th highest paid coach garbage.

I actually looked more in depth at Barnes’ contract just for general talk, not if he’s worth it or not. Some of the bonuses in his contract seem high in general but I don’t know if most P5 (plus BE) coaches have these kind of bonuses.

Annual Raise- $100K
SEC regular season title- 400K
SEC Tournament title- 200K
NCAA Tourney appearance- $200K
R32- 400K
S16- 600K
E8- 800K
APR of 980- 100K

Like Josh Heupel (different sport I know) in his new contract gets $300K for making the College Football playoff and Barnes gets 200K for a NCAAT appearance. And a CFP appearance is way more valuable than a NCAAT appearance. I’m curious what the standard bonus for for a NCAAT appearance is.

Edit: Man…Barnes gets a $1.5M bonus if he wins a national title and Heupel gets a $500K bonus for winning a National title. Whoever did Barnes contract I want on my side forever lol

The football program is already valuable and another NC wouldn’t be shocking. A basketball natty after never being in the FF puts basketball on a whole new level. It’s also much less likely to achieve… that extra $1,000,000 is safe.

Have you watched the last 20 years? I’d be shocked if we win the East again at this point 😂😂😂

I could understand the high bonus if we paid Barnes like $3.5M or didnt have yearly raises. It shocked me to see how much more his bonuses are compared to our football coach.

TN only needs to jump GA to win the east. They are 3rd and would kick the **** out of FL right now. The Florida game needs to be moved to October or November.

TN was 3-7 a year ago with the worst coach in history and less than a year later now competes with any other team in the country.

So i didn’t post Barnes’ bonus for past the E8…

F4: $1M
Title game appearance: $1.2M
National Title: $1.5M

So I looked up Eric Musselman’s new contract he signed in April…this was done before Barnes.

SEC regular season title- 100K
SEC Tournament title- 100K
NCAA Tourney appearance- None
R32- $50K
S16- $250K
E8- None
F4- $350K
Title- $500K

Goodness lol

My comment was more tongue in cheek. I’m a big Heupel fan. I’m still shocked at Barnes’ bonus structure especially compared to a guy like Eric Musselman

I'm a very big Barnes supporter...that being said, those incentives aren't really that harmful to put into a contract given his overall lack of March success. I don't think UT worried too much about agreeing to them.

That being said, I really hope UT has to pay each and every one of them haha!

True. I’m just more shocked there more than the football coach AND they are so much more than other his peers.

@zjcvols I’m pretty sure I had read that those bonuses aren’t cumulative, so if you win it all you get just that bonus…not R32+S16+E8 etc.

Yes I knew that. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear. It’s still a lot though based off what I read. Because when I looked through Oats’ and Musselman’s contract it was the same way, they are not cumulative.

So, you think UT finally got it right with JH ? I do and they are so much fun to watch play. I like the DC, too. Tim Banks deserves some love, but man, our offense, Hooker and the WRs have been sensational. I wish Evans could stay healthy. Hell while I'm wishing, I wish Hooker had started from the jump, would have beat Pitt, for sure, imo

I think a lot of fans are still hung up on Pearl and doesn’t really give Barnes a fair shot because he’s too “old school”.

Compare his offense to Pearls, his offense is all about spacing and getting to the rim. Nothing flashy but it works when the players execute.

Take away Pearl’s only Elite 8, Barnes has had the same tournament success as Pearl during his time here.
So why are we taking away Pearl's Elite 8? Does it not count or something?

I think that there is a small window to exploit this type of offense. It might not work long term in the SEC, but there’s also the possibility that TN is on the cutting edge of where NCAA football is headed. If only we had a great defense to go along with it. That will require a few more recruiting cycles. It is a bit of a gimmick and the summit might could be an SEC championship or two and some appearances in the playoffs (especially if it is expanded to 12 spots). But I’d rather be competing for SEC titles again instead of being a conference bottom feeder.

It will really help in the near term if the flopping rules are updated. But the powers in charge may not want to encourage the Go Fast Offense style of football. Right now the fake flopping neutralizes the advantage versus superior teams.

It was one game. Nobody wins them all. It is more about luck than anything else when the losses pop up. To get a tournament run, you first need to be IN THE TOURNAMENT. Pearl was 1 for 6 making the NCAAT and then also the EE. Barnes can get us into the NCAAT almost every year. I have no doubt that a FF will happen as long as TN keeps making the field and receives high seeds and favorable draws.

The narrative that the basketball program is not good historically and we should just be happy to make the tournament most years is complete BS. This program has the facilities, fan base, and financial commitment to be in the hunt for a Final 4 every year. Barnes has done fine but he is not untouchable.

That takes some mighty strong faith when he's had one in 34 years of coaching.

Your first sentence is off target and isn’t happening.

Your second sentence is a fantasy. Every year? With 325 plus teams in the mix?

Those lead to the third which is just dumb.

The recruiting is on a level that it has never been at before.

None of his 5 stops had notable basketball tradition before he arrived. Certainly not blue blooded and he competed with several of those in his conferences. He didn’t stay at George Mason, Providence, or Clemson long enough to build to a Final Four. He had one at Texas and more than doubled their appearances.

How many times in history has Tennessee made the Final Four?

How is it different now?

He’s made us nationally relevant in a sport we are usually afterthoughts. We wouldn’t have gotten Chandler without him. He’s winning a lot more than he loses. If we were Duke or UK you’d have a point, however, we are not Duke or UK.

He beat a Blue Blood in UNC. Great recruiting class. Well be fine by March.
