Troy Calhoun on Charlton Warren

End of the day Butch brought Martinez with him. He could have hired someone like this when he got the job.

I understand your point and agree completely. Its like Jones has to get burned by some things (S&C) to learn things that other coaches understand instinctively. And for those who want to defend Martinez performance in year one....hasn't that success been greatly attributed to T Fair?

When CBJ arrived at Tennessee everyone assumed he could hire any coach he wanted. I doubt that was true. Having been a manager of professionals in the past I can sure you that there are boundary conditions that surround hiring like budgets, timing, fit.
When Butch arrived he had to put together a staff and hit the recruiting trail fast. It's like trying to find a restroom when you really have to go. Even if it stinks you will use it. Martinez may have been an adequate coach of the mid-major level but obviously couldn't handle it here in the SEC. Our first need at Tennessee was for recruiting. Perhaps CBJ new all along that from the developmental side we needed a stronger coach. The performance of our secondary wasn't that bad the first year or two but has declined.
At any rate I'm really happy with the new hire.

I've known Charlton since I was six years old. Dude is a stand up guy. I grew up a mile down the road from him. He was always "popular" in school, but never acted like it. He's always had a military discipline air about him. He was a big time head busting linebacker and a pretty good running back in high school. He popped me a couple of times when we played middle school ball together. He is a tremendous hire for us, and funny enough, I joked on FB with his wife last year about him going to Tennessee! On a side note, he played three years of high school with Hines Ward. Every school he coaches at, gets a huge boost on their passing defense.

I notice people praising the Scott promotion and Warren hire, while trashing Coach Canales. Coach Scott worked with Coach Canales at FSU. They obviously know each other. Anyone who thinks the new OC, Scott, did not approve hiring Canales, must be a few brewskies short of a six-pack.

That would be USF buddy, not FSU, But I agree with your sentiment

While Warren has evolved into a respected recruiter and an impressive position coach, he said his time in the Air Force forged the man he is today, instilling the value of discipline, trust, brotherhood and teamwork. He plans to bring those same principles and lessons to Tennessee.

He knows college football and the military are apples and oranges in the big picture, but “all those things aren’t just taglines for me.” “This is not the military,” Warren said. “These are 18-year-old kids that are trying to be young men, playing at a high level and getting an education. But the principles I learned what back in those days still apply.”

Thanks for the post Shaun!
Maybe, just maybe this will hush some of the whine-azz, titty babies on here.

Man im so excited for this hire. Just think how many times our DBs got burned and didnt look for the ball amd got called for PI. If we can change that and make those breakups or even an INT every now and then that would be huge. Probably would have resulted in at least 1 more win last season.

Canales is a good coach. He has proven the Peter Principle a few times in his career but is probably at a level where he can perform now.

But is Canales "good enough"?

Scott is a good coach. He would be considered a slam dunk hire for a lot of programs in most conferences... but how does that translate to the SEC?

I'm still not sure that Jones understands that he's hiring a staff to compete in the SEC rather than the Big East or MAC.

Good Lord.

Yeah, he's that dumb. He doesn't realize that he's coaching in the SEC. He could have hired absolutely anyone --coaches all over the country are hovering over their phones like 16-year-olds, just hoping for that call, no matter what the AD situation is, or what CBJ's coaching philosophy is, or anything else that might give a hot candidate pause.

This is the sort of thing that makes your crowd so irritating. It's one thing to dislike his coaching style, game-day calls (ick), and on and on. But acting like he's a moron really devalues any reasonable argument you put up.
