If it ccame down to TT or Chavis, give me Troop. i think we need new blood at the top anyway. Some new ideas, innovation. That's why I was so disappointed to see Cut come back. He's a great qb coach, but his playcalling is tired.

If Trooper leaves, or announces that he will leave, before signing day UT will lose some commits. I gurantee you this angle is already being worked hard by the competition.

Why? Because Chavis is the best DC of all time? Please tell me when the Mustang package ever worked worth a flip without some NFL caliber players at DT, because I cannot recall it ever happening. It's my understanding that Chavis does not even recruit off campus.

Thats what Im saying. Its amazing people seem to forget the top-ranked defense we had in '05 or how the defense has carried the team the past several years many times. Its obvious that we were weak on the d-line, quick but not strong in linebacker, and undermanned and overrated in the secondary. And yet they really didnt have a flat-out bad game, considering their talent. Arkansas was just bigger and stronger then us...I dont think any scheme would have helped. And the D was exhausted in the lsu game, they held psu to 13 points in the bowl game which should have been enough to win.

Ive never been a fan of the mustang either because it seems fairly up and down. But I also think corner is pretty hard to play and probably even harder. And then when you consider we had as our starting corners a receiver from his freshman and sophmore year who had only one year of starting experience (wade) and a safety that came off serious injury (stewart)...I think they did alright.

Around here it seems like if there is one bad game it becomes flavor of the week to rip on the coaches. Everyone had anoited Cut in the beginning of the season, now everyone is saying he isnt so great and good riddance. Same thing with Chavis...a year ago he was a defensive genius, now people want to see him gone. Its just ridiculous.

The point is that a big part of the success that Chavis' defenses have had is the fact that he often has some very high quality recruits to start with, however, the general consensus seems to be that Chavis does not do a whole lot to get those high quality recruits to sign on the dotted line. I think Chavis is a good, career DC. Give him great talent and he'll give you a great defense. Give him questionable talent and the results are not going to be so great. Things have not changed much in a long time. Opposing QBs easily read the blitzes and check-out of plays and opposing receivers seem to know where the holes are whenever it's 3rd and long. That should be on the coach. Alas, I forget that since the system worked in '98 we'd surely be rolling in championships if the players would only execute. :eek:lol:

Nothing wrong with getting new blood in the program every now and again. I would say that the offense has benifited mightly from it. And not talking about Coach Cut. You look all the way down the line, it seemed as if they all showed improvement. Sometimes its better to make the wrong choice as no choice at all, you can learn from a mistake, your not going to learn much from status quo.

If that's tru I'd tell Johnny C to quit being jealous and worry about his defense; or lack of it. Troop is getting alot of credit.

I had dinner w/ a former Vol and NFL player yesterday evening and he said Phil is so lucky he hired Troop when he did. He credited him bigtime for the discipiline coming halfway back to the program, recruiting coming back. He said Phil was a teddy bear, especially to the starters...

I can also say this, I took my youth team to a UT practice in '02 & '03 to watch and meet players. The defensive coaches were the only ones who were vocal and demanding. You never heard a peep from Slade, Washington, McCorvey; Sanders was a little vocal but still not much. Brooks was fired up the whole practice.

I took my team this fall again and all you could hear was Rut, Roper & Troop demanding things from their players. Chavis and Brooks got after the d a little but nothing like Cut and his off staff, he was all over the QB's. Way more vocal than I ever thought and was cussing like a sailor. Troop kept busting jokes on his WR's, it was hilarious.

Oh and Fulmer at all three practices I've ever been too, talked to Hamilton (or other visitors) the WHOLE time.

I did want to ask this, Coach Brooks always seems to a very good job, good recruiter. Does have any intrest in moving up, does he have a DC background anywhere?

Please, tell me what I should know. I like how I can repeat something that I've heard and then you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. I guess you are more knowledgable about what I hear than I am. It's been said on this board many times that there is some friction between Trooper and Chavis. Learn to spell, and then tell me what I'm talking about.

As will I pretty much any day of the week. Of course, what I hope for is the guy who can take marginal talent, squeeze every possible bit of effort out of them, and design a scheme that plays to their strengths.

Discipline shows up on the field too. That's why the 05 team wasn't great. Too many penalties, too many turnovers, too many mistakes= a lack of execution. The coach needs to demand perfection in order to recieve perfection:not the assistants.
