Trey Smith status?

Any school that would clear him to play currently would be incredibly negligent and reckless, and would also be staring a massive lawsuit in the face from his family when his condition seriously hurts him or worse. He needs time, medical attention, and rest, and even those things may not be enough for him to ever play again.

What’s different than when he was cleared the first time as far as responsibility of the university?

Because the issue was supposedly cleared. That is not the case and may be chronic. If it is chronic and can't be treated, it would probably be suicide for him to keep playing.

I had read somewhere and it is obvious to me the doctors are trying to treat it and trey is wanting to play or he would already be medically retired. He will have to be medically cleared but there will always be risk involved and he will have to make that choice if the risk is worth it to him.

Agreed, but I'm just talking about as it stands. We'll have to wait and see if that changes. I just hope and pray it all works out for him.

He played 11 games at his new school.... his issue presented itself again and it was decided he couldn’t play....as long as trey is medically cleared to play by someone then it should be his choice whether he wants to take that risk or not.
Wrong. A school absolutely has the right, especially if their medical staff and legal team disagrees.

As long as he’s MEDICALLY cleared...that’s the whole point.

First of all the “school” isn’t going to be the ones to clear anyone ever, ultimately it will be a Doctor, most likely one on the teams medical staff as well as an outside Specialist as a second opinion before he would ever be cleared to play, and trust me no Doctor will sign off on this if they believe there is a high chance of it hurting Trey because A. it would be career suicide and B. No physician is going to be inclined to possibly cause great harm/death to anyone let alone an upstanding young man like Trey

What about Newquiche Richards and that DB who went to jail? I thought I'd read and I'm very confident that some grad assistant said the door was open for those two, if they can pass the TK Jr. "forty foot wall" test.

I don't want to be that person, but if you discuss PHI (Patient Health Information) without the expressed written consent from Trey and post it on a public forum, you could be held accountable with fines up to $10K per incident. So, re-posting could be considered a single incident to the 100th power on this board :). Just trying to protect my fellow VolNation.
HIPAA only applies to those who actually have knowledge of patient records. Generally meaning health providers and any contracted companies like billers, etc. If one of his providers came on here, with knowledge of his actual medical records (as opposed to what might be on the media and social media sites like this), they could be (and should be) sued be from here until eternity. HIPAA does not apply to those without access to a person's health records. Otherwise, how many times would the National Enquirer and News of the World be sued for articles about Jennifer Aniston's alien babies or something?

HIPAA compliance is an area of my profession, so yeah, I'm quite sure about this.

There were other stories last year citing the leading expert on his condition, blood clots in the lungs in 2018, saw Trey last year regarding his treatment and cleared him to play. Based on how things worked out then per USAToday, held out of spring practice due to medication, played in the fall when medication cycle was over, sure seems like they are on track for the same thing. Some of you shade tree experts are going have your shade tree MDs removed and no longer allowed to practice medicine under a tin shed in a junk yard in Bemis, TN if Trey runs through the T again. That's all I'm sayin', Trey, Pruitt, nor the UTAD has sidelined him permanently for 2019 play, shade tree MDs on VN have. Vols' Smith returns after treatment for blood clots in lungs

And I was onboard when that was announced LAST YEAR. Disagreed with some that didn’t see him ever being cleared. REOCCURRING is where this got hinky. It’s a pattern and his body didn’t heal after following all the guidelines and caution. It’s a pattern and a life threatening one if he engages in risky physical activity. He has the right to hold out hope and consult all the non shade tree medical experts and he’s utilizing it. Casting shade yourself on posters with real life experiences with this condition is certainly a productive exercise.

I'm casting shade on people making diagnosis and predictions about Trey Smith, not themselves or their particular conditions. That's a VERY big difference. If people have not the access to exam him, nor the expertise to make a medical call, nor access to his records, IMO they should STFU about his future. They can share all they want about their personal experiences concerning their health conditions and would find me sympathetic.

That's the truth. Right now it sounds like some people here want him to play tag with the grim reaper. A very selfish and nefarious perspective.

Not making diagnosis. Episode 1- develops blood clots/ Episode 2-takes anti-coagulants, stops taking meds, recurrence of blood clots/ No Dr is going to put their license on the line at this point

Incorrect: Episode 1- develops blood clots Episode 2- cycles anti-coagulants,stands down for spring practice Episode 3- Cycles away from anticoagulants, runs thru the T and plays most of the season of 2018. Episode 4- new blood clots found, still on roster, with support of UTAD and Pruitt, no reason to think he's not back redoing Episode 2 once again. Unless you're his treating physician you don't know WTF you're talking about, again.

Reoccurrence of blood clots in his LUNGS...few months from the end of his treatment.

There’s got to be a point where some of y’all just put down the orange koolaid and accept the reality that he’s not coming back barring some unknown break through in anticoagulants

I use the term "school" in a general sense. I understand it will be a doctor and not the school.

Well you were talking about negligence by the school and I just wanted to assure you that no one will be negligent in this situation just for the sake of getting a good football player back on the field for UT.

The sticking point for me in this whole scenario is that he has had 2 episodes of pulmonary emboli. This means he has at least, as far as we know, a hypercoagulable state of uncertain etiology. I am positive that test for the genetic causes of this have been done and the results of those should determine if chronic therapy is required. If that is the case then obviously the best course of action is to avoid activity which can have extreme deleterious effect i.e. football. I have no knowledge of his test results therefore, I will leave it up to competent and compassionate professionals to make the correct decisions.
